Cynthia Formosa qualified as a State Registered Podiatrist from the Department of Health, Malta in February 1989. She worked as a Senior Podiatrist with this department from 1989 to 1994. She left the Health Department to set up a private practice in Podiatry until 2009. Cynthia Formosa was awarded the Masters of Science in Podiatry in April 2003 from the University of Brighton, United Kingdom. She was later awarded the PhD in Podiatry in October 2009 from the same university.
Prof.Cynthia Formosa is currently working on full-time basis with the University of Malta as an Associate Professor inside the Faculty of Health Sciences. She sits on a number of boards within the University of Malta including Faculty Doctoral Committee. She has served as the Head of Podiatry Department for 17 years and is currently on 2-year Sabattical leave working or research projects, European Grants and publications till October 2024.
She was also President of the Association of Podiatrists, Malta for two years. She is a member of the International Federation of Podiatrists and member of the Clinical Biomechanics and Human Performance Research Team at the Faculty of Health, Staffordshire University. She is also a founder member of the Diabetes Foot Research Group, University of Malta and ENPODHE. She is currently the Chairperson for the European Council of Podiatrists.
Prof. Cynthia Formosa completed research focusing on the Prevalence Rate of Diabetes Foot Risk Factors and Complications in the Maltese Diabetic Complications. She is currently working on other post-doctoral research focusing on National Diabetes Foot Screening Guidelines amongst other aspects of the DM foot. She has over 300 research outputs with 100 peer reviewed publications.
She was appointed as External Examiner for the Podiatry programme at Glasgow Caledonian University Scotland.She is currently External Examiner at University of Galway, Ireland
She has reviewed a number of grant applications and international peer reviewed journals.
She is a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Sport, Health and Exercise Research, Faculty of Health, Staffordshire University.
POD4015 - Metabolic and Neurological Disorders Affecting the Foot
Professor Cynthia Formosa completed her first Post-Doctoral research focusing on the Prevalence Rate of Diabetes Foot Risk Factors and Complications in the Maltese Diabetic Complications. Four publications have been published in international peer- reviewed journals. She is currently working on her second post-doctoral research focusing on National Diabetes Foot Screening Guidelines.
As a founder member of the Diabetes Foot Research Group, Malta she has worked on a project entitled 'Innovative Approaches in using Thermography for Clinical Applications in Diabetes'. This research involves Thermography which is becoming an important investigative tool in the diabetic foot.The aim of this research was to determine whether a thermal index may provide adequate scoring range for assessing wounds by considering physiological as well as morphological changes on the skin surface. Various publications have been published in this field.
European Network of Podiatry in Higher Education [ENPODHE]: Was responsible for the necessary discussions in order to become part of this organization and have hosted and organized the 2016 ENPODHE General Assembly and Annual Conference in Malta.
