Applicants must be in possession of:

To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants must be in possession of a Master in Counselling or Master of Arts in Transcultural Counselling from this University or an equivalent qualification in counselling from another higher education institution recognised by Senate subject to the approval of the Board.

Applicants referred to above are also required to have a minimum of 3 years of supervised experience in a counselling setting. This experience should be obtained after applicants have been awarded the qualification indicated above.

All applicants shall be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit.

  1. Professional aptitude and disposition shall be measured by means of exercises involving an extended personal interview.
  2. Applicants who obtain less than 60% for the professional aptitude and disposition criterion shall automatically not be admitted into the Course.

The overarching aim of this postgraduate certificate is to equip qualified and practising counsellors with the skills and knowledge to provide professional supervision.

Based on local and international research, the heart of the programme is counselling supervision practice, individually and in small groups. The teaching and learning activities in class will be supported by online resources. There will be opportunities to engage with current developments in supervision in different cultural and organisational settings.

Requirement for award of Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision: 30 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision - P.G.Cert. - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • study the principal theories and models of supervision,
  • analyse research evidence on supervision,
  • explore the social, cultural and organisational contexts in which supervision takes place,
  • examine the challenges and dilemmas, including ethical issues, which arise in counselling supervision, and
  • develop supervision skills and self-awareness as a supervisor through practising supervision skills on the course, undertaking a counselling supervision placement.

Counselling supervision is mandatory for counsellors and professionals in kindred professions. As a graduate from this programme, you will be able to supervise counsellors in educational, health, community and transcultural settings as well as provide supervision for counsellors who practice privately. Counselling supervision as a discipline can also be an area that can be researched in different cultural and ethnic settings.
