Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Applicants may be registered as students on the Course if they are in possession of at least a SEC pass in Maltese at grade 5 or better and of:

  1. the degree of Bachelor of Education (Honours) or
  2. a first cycle degree together with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or
  3. a first cycle and/or second cycle degree or higher and a permanent teacherҳ warrant or
  4. any other recognized teaching qualification together with a permanent teacherҳ warrant or
  5. a first cycle and/or second cycle degree or higher, and shall have one-year teaching experience in a recognised institution.

Eligible applicants may register as visiting students for individual study-units and obtain credit for them. Should they be accepted to join the Course within seven years from following the first study-unit, the Faculty Board may allow the transfer of these credits to the studentҳ academic record for the Course.

The course is intended if you are a qualified teacher who would like to enhance your professional training by pursuing specialisation in the area of Teaching Maltese as a Foreign Language. The course shall extend over a period of one year of part-time study. A relevant number of study-units will be offered every semester, and if you are an eligible applicant, then you may register as a visiting student for individual study-units and obtain credit for them. The programme of study is assigned 30 ECTS credits, and a small number of options are offered depending on your teaching context and experience. Having experience in the Teaching of Maltese as a Foreign Language (TMFL) is not a necessary pre-requisite to the postgraduate programme.

Requirement for award of Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Maltese as a Foreign Language: 30 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Maltese as a Foreign Language - P.G.Cert. -, under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise teaching methodologies relevant to foreign language teaching.
  • Create and evaluate resources for the TMFL.
  • Develop and implement lessons in MFL.
  • Assess, adapt and implement national and international written and other documents relevant to TMFL.
