A Bachelor's degree from this University obtained with at least Second Class Honours or Category II in an area of study as deemed relevant by the Board, or an equivalent qualification obtained from any other recognised university, provided that where applicants lack essential knowledge in particular areas not covered in their first degree, the Board may require applicants to follow and pass supplementary study-units to which not more than 12 ECTS credits are assigned.

Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Baroque Architecture awarded by this University and who have work experience that is related to the Course, may, after an interview, be admitted to a preparatory programme, which programme, if successfully completed, shall give access to the degree.

The Master of Arts in Baroque Studies will provide you with detailed knowledge of the Baroque landscape of past Centuries, and its influence and reminder in our contemporary world. This Masters programme takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of the Baroque age, its heritage and legacy. Through this transdisciplinary approach, you will acquire deepened knowledge on the political, military, religious, social, philosophical, scientific, literary, artistic, architectural and conservation aspects of the Baroque period. By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to research and present an area of Baroque interest by carrying out a research-based dissertation with a topic of your choice.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Arts in Baroque Studies s - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have a good working knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, enabling you to pursue research work on any of the topics covered.
  • Acquire the necessary research skills for further study on the topics covered.
  • Demonstrate acquired expertise of the Baroque age and conduct in-depth research.
  • Critically assess, objectively present, and analyse relevant literature.
  • Discuss, compare and contrast baroque landscape designs of different European countries through an understanding of the theory and practice of Baroque architecture.

As a graduate in the Master of Arts in Baroque Studies, you will be able to embark on a career path that may include academia, museum curation, art conservation, historic preservation, and cultural heritage management, provided that the necessary requirements are met. Your expertise in Baroque art, history, and culture will open doors to positions in universities, research institutions, galleries, and cultural organisations on an international scope. Should you wish to further your studies, you may also choose to enrol in a doctorate programme, either locally or abroad.
