Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. a degree in Education with at least Third Class Honours from this University or a degree from another university recognized as equivalent for the purpose, together with a minimum of five years’ teaching experience, or
  2. any other degree with at least Third Class Honours or Category III from this University or a degree from another university recognized as equivalent for the purpose together with a recognized teaching or education qualification and a minimum of five years’ teaching experience, or
  3. a Master’s degree that qualified applicants for a Teacher’s Warrant, together with a minimum of five year’s teaching experience, or
  4. any other recognised teaching qualification together with at least five years’ teaching experience.

Applicants in possession of the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership may be allowed to join Part Two of the Course, if they have completed successfully the Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum average mark of 65%.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 24 students.

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, applicants shall be invited for an interview. The criteria for the selection process are:

  1. qualifications as identified in the above paragraphs: 20%
  2. professional aptitude and disposition: 20%
  3. performance during the interview: 20% and
  4. professional development profile: 40%

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

This masters’ course is designed to confront the problems of leadership in the educational setting. It will focus on the development of managerially-oriented competences and leadership development. The aim of the course is to encourage you to reflect analytically and constructively on the nature of your own current experiences at whatever level you are currently working in. The programme presents an intellectually challenging, developmental opportunity if you aspire to bring leadership to senior level educational administration positions in schools, post-secondary institutions and Directorate level. The programme is designed to provide the knowledge base that will equip you to harness human and other resources necessary to assure highly effective educational institutions. It is organized round what educational leaders need to know and be able to do in order both to understand societal needs and demands regarding education, and to be able to create transformative change that is responsive to societal requirements.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Arts in Educational Leadership - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • describe, investigate and apply models of strategic leadership and decision making
  • engage in strategic leadership and strategic direction
  • identify and examine the key characteristics of school effectiveness
  • synthesise the knowledge about school improvement as a strategy for educational change
  • design school improvement strategies
  • implement curriculum design and development and implementation initiatives.

This programme is ideal if you wish to engage in leadership positions both within schools and in other levels, including the Education Directorates, further and higher education institutions. Candidates who have followed this programme have taken on leadership positions in Malta and have also been accepted for doctoral studies both locally and abroad, while some have also had the opportunity of being awarded a scholarship.
