The Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management is designed to confront the problems of leadership in the educational setting. It will focus on the development of managerially-oriented competences and on leadership development. The aim of the course is to assist practitioners to reflect analytically and constructively on the nature of their own management experience. It presents an intellectually challenging, developmental opportunity to experienced practitioners who aspire to bring leadership to senior level educational administration positions in schools, post-secondary institutions and Directorate level. On successful completion of the course graduates should be able to provide increased professional leadership as they contribute to the decisions shaping the institutions in which they work. The course aims to attract students who have at least 5 years teaching experience. Over the years it has been our policy to take on students with varied backgrounds, different ages and respecting a gender balance. This has proved to be successful as one of the aims is to allow participants to learn from each other. This diversity allows for interesting dynamics and learning to take place. The programme is designed to provide participants with the knowledge base, and rigorous intellectual analysis and experience that will equip them to harness the human and other resources necessary to assure highly effective educational institutions. It is organized round what educational leaders need to know and be able to do in order to both understand societal needs and demands regarding education, and to be able to create transformative change that is responsive to societal requirements. Graduates will have a deeper understanding of leadership theory and contextualize knowledge to the solution of problems in education as well as to foster and sustain excellence. The programme will also aid students in developing the analytical and communication skills required for successful leadership.
The following seven objectives will guide the Masters programme: 1. To present and discuss different models of leadership and management in education. 2. To introduce course participants to the contemporary literature on the theory and practice of educational management and leadership. 3. To explore the essential skills of management and qualities of leadership. 4. To help evaluate and understand the policy environment in which education functions. 5. To help and understand change in complex institutions. 6. To help inculcate the concepts of the learner, learning and the learning organization. 7. To explore and develop the knowledge and skills required to become more effective managers and leaders in education at various levels, in different sectors and in various roles.
Applicants may be registered as students on the Course if they are in possession of:
(a) a degree in Education with at least Third Class Honours from this University or a degree from another university recognized as equivalent for the purpose, together with a minimum of five years’ teaching experience, or
(b) any other degree with at least Third Class Honours or Category III from this University or a degree from another university recognized as equivalent for the purpose together with a recognized teaching or education qualification and a minimum of five years’ teaching experience, or
(c) a Master’s degree that qualified applicants for a Teacher’s Warrant, together with a minimum of five year’s teaching experience, or
(d) any other recognised teaching qualification together with at least five years’ teaching experience.
Applicants in possession of the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership may be allowed to join Part Two of the Course, if they have completed successfully the Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum average mark of 65%.
The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed to register on the Course, depending on the availability of resources. The number of available places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.
If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, applicants shall be invited for an interview. The criteria for the selection process are:
(a) qualifications as identified in the above paragraphs: 20% (b) professional aptitude and disposition: 20% (c) performance during the interview: 20% and (d) professional development profile: 40%
The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2015.

By the end of the programme, participants will have: - a deep understanding of strategic leadership and strategic direction - a conceptual understanding of models of strategic leadership and decision making - a knowledge and understanding of the key characteristics of school effectiveness. - a knowledge about the dynamics of school improvement as a strategy for educational change - the capacity to design school improvement strategies - the ability to initiate curriculum design and development initiatives.
The course aims to provide opportunities for participants to: - develop sound intrapersonal skills - consider their own and others’ professional development needs - explore the psychological principles underlying team building - develop the skills of team leadership - produce personal and team-action plans - produce a professional project that can leave a direct impact on the school/College/institution the participant/s form part of.
By the end of the programme, participants will have a critical understanding of: - their own personality - their own personal and professional development needs and those of their team - the complexities of organizations - the development of effective relationships and communication with other members.
The Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management is an advanced level, field-based programme which is targeted at educational leaders seeking to develop their organizations to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and demanding society.
This programme is ideal for those who wish to engage in leadership positions both within schools and in other levels, including the Education Directorates, further and higher education institutions. Quite a number of candidates who have followed such a programme have taken on leadership positions in Malta and have also been accepted for doctoral studies both locally and abroad. Quite a few have also been awarded scholarships.
