Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. a Bachelor degree obtained with Second Class (Honours) or better in the same area or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for, or
  2. a Bachelor degree in the same area or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area of study, or similar qualifications deemed by the Board relevant to that chosen for the Course, or
  3. a degree from this or another university, which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).

The Board may also consider applicants in possession of degrees or qualifications other than those referred to in (a) to (c) if they also present a portfolio of work confirmed to have been carried out by them and which is related to the area of study applied for to the satisfaction of the Board.

Applicants applying in terms of (b), (c) and those referred to in the previous paragraph may be required to follow a preparatory programme.

Applicants shall indicate the provisional title for the dissertation on their application for admission. The application shall include a research proposal as well as a statement by the head of department concerned that applicants possess the training, knowledge and capabilities required for the proposed line of study and research.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. This programme of study is also offered on a full-time basis. Please consult the Registrar's website for more information pertaining to courses offered by the University.

The course is presently offered on either a full-time or part-time basis. It consists of a research-based Master, with 10 ECTS credits awarded for lecture-based work and 80 ECTS credits for the student's thesis. The lecture-based study-units are aimed towards providing you with the advanced research techniques required for the writing of a Master-level thesis. All areas relating to libraries, archives, other forms of information-providing institutions and related issues are considered as topics for research by the Department's Board of Studies. In addition to the research component, students are required to register for 10 ECTS credits in taught study-units as directed by the Board.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continue up to the end of semester 2 of academic year 2026-27.

 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have required research skills and experience in undertaking research at a postgraduate level.
  • Further your understanding of particular issues related to the researched area.
  • Be able to research into more vital venues and in areas as yet unexplored.
  • Discuss, argue and critique a standpoint within a particular area of knowledge.
  • Demonstrate a deeper understanding in a specific area within a field of knowledge.
  • Choose among different methodological approaches on the basis of the question you are meant to answer.

The Masters programme will enable you as a successful candidate to apply for professional level positions with state and private entities where library, archive and information management positions are concerned. Other areas may include IT-related positions and museums-related ones.
