  2. a Bachelor degree with at least Category II in an area of study that includes a substantial amount of study-units in Linguistics or an area related to Linguistics, provided that such applicants may be required to complete a preparatory programme.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

This programme of study is also offered on a full-time basis. Please consult the Registrar's website for more information pertaining to courses offered by the University.

This programme requires you to collaborate with your supervisor to identify a topic of interest and then design and execute your own research programme in the chosen area. The dissertation topics are extremely varied, ranging from experimental and corpus-based studies to more theoretical work. Ultimately, whether or not a topic is accepted depends on the collaborating ability that you and your supervisor will have in managing to identify a topic that is of interest to both of you.

The Master of Arts in Linguistics is composed of taught study-units and a research component. Students will be expected to obtain a total of 90 ECTS over a period of six semesters of part-time study.

Students will be required to register for the study-units as directed by the board.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continue up to the end of Semester 2 of academic year 2026-27.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts in Linguistics under the auspices of the Institute of Linguistics.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate theories and empirical results from previous studies.
  • Formulate questions and select the right methodology to address them.
  • Critically appraise existing work in the chosen area of research.
  • Identify gaps in scientific knowledge and address them through appropriate methodologies.
  • Critically evaluate outcomes of a study, whether this is theoretical or empirical.
  • Bring the results to bear on a more precise formulation of hypotheses and present the research results to an audience.

As a successful holder of this degree, you will be able to enter a career, both locally and abroad, as a linguist, computational linguist, copywriter, editor, accent coach, researcher, teacher and as a speech or language therapist.

If you would like to further your studies, or are interested in pursuing a career as an academic, the option of doing a doctorate is available at the University of Malta or at a foreign institution abroad.
