The Master of Arts in Media and Communications provides you with an in-depth knowledge of many aspects of what is an inextricable part of today’s society. The taught units, as well as a mentored placement component, a supervised dissertation (that should include empirical research), together with mentored practice sessions with appointed tutors in areas in which the student chooses to specialise, ascertain preparedness for employment in one or more of the areas that form part of Media and Communications. This is a three-year course; the first year and a half are dedicated to taught study-units, while the rest of the course is predominantly research and project based, where you will work with supervisors and mentors in order to achieve the maximum level of academic and practical proficiency in an area of specialisation.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(1) (a) a Bachelor’s degree with Honours obtained with Second Class or better in the same area or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for, or

(b) the degree of Bachelor in the same area or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area of study, or similar qualifications deemed by the Board relevant to that chosen for the Course, or

(c) a degree from this or another university, which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).

(2) The Board may also consider applicants in possession of degrees or qualifications other than those referred to above if they also present a portfolio of work confirmed to have been carried out by them and which is related to the area of study applied for to the satisfaction of the Board.

Applicants shall indicate the provisional title for the dissertation on their application for admission. The application shall include a research proposal as well as a statement by the head of department concerned that applicants possess the training, knowledge and capabilities required for the proposed line of study and research.

Preparatory Programme

Applicants applying in terms of sub-paragraphs (b) and (c) of paragraph (1) and in terms of paragraph (2) may be required to follow a preparatory programme as specified by the Board, which extends over one year of full-time study. The preparatory programme shall include study-units in the area of study concerned, and may include also study-units which are intended to train students in the competencies required to conduct research work.

During the preparatory programme students shall be required to register for a number of study-units for which a total of not less than thirty and not more than sixty credits are assigned.

Students shall be required to successfully complete the preparatory programme of study with an average mark of 55% or better prior to their registration for the Course.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in February 2022.

– skills in areas that can be applied to practice, such as journalism, visual communications and design, internet communications, etc.
– Theoretical and practical skills in different areas of Journalism;
– Marketing Communications skills that can be applicable to multiple career paths.
The course is intended if you are a graduate who is already in, or would like to make a career of any area that falls within Media and Communications. The taught component of the course supports an in-depth mastery of the different manifestations of media and communications, while the independent study component provides a platform for specialisation in any of the areas listed above. This course is intended if you are a media professional seeking an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon that dominates present day society.
As a graduate in the Master of Arts in media and Communications, you will be able to follow careers in any of the areas pertaining to this very important, overarching component of today’s society. Careers can be followed in any of the different branches of Journalism; in Design (Graphic Design, Editorial Design, Advertising Design, Design pertaining to Corporate Communications, etc.); Public Relations; Film and Video production; Marketing Communications; Social Media Marketing; Internet Communications; as well as in careers that involve research in Media and Communications.
