The Master of Arts in Media and Communications provides students with an in-depth knowledge of many aspects of what is an inextricable part of today’s society. The taught units, as well as a mentored placement component, a supervised dissertation (that should include empirical research), together with mentored practice sessions with appointed tutors in areas in which the student chooses to specialise, ascertain preparedness for employment in one or more of the areas that form part of Media and Communications.
This is a three year course. The first year and a half are dedicated to taught study-units. The rest of the course is predominantly research and project based, with students working with supervisors and mentors in order to achieve the maximum level of academic and practical proficiency in an area of specialisation.
(1) The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:
(a) a Bachelor’s degree obtained with Second Class Honours or better in Communications or in a closely related area of study deemed appropriate by the Board or
(b) a Bachelor’s degree in Communications or in a closely related area of study deemed appropriate by the Board, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area of study or
(c) a degree from this or another university, which the Board considers as comparable to the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).
(2) The Board may consider applicants in possession of other qualifications if they also present a compendium of recent works confirmed to have been carried out by them and which is related to the area of study applied for to the satisfaction of the Board.
(3) The admission of applicants may be made conditional on the result of an interview conducted by an interviewing board composed of at least three members, appointed by the Board for the purpose.
(4) Applicants applying in terms of sub-paragraphs (b) and (c) of paragraph (1) and in terms of paragraph (2) may be required to complete a preparatory programme, comprising not less than 30 and not more than 60 ECTS credits as directed by the Board, with an average mark of 55% or better prior to their registration as regular students on the Course.
(5) The Board may grant applicants full or partial exemption from the requirement of the preparatory programme if it is satisfied that the applicant possesses post first cycle degree work experience that adequately prepares applicants for the Course.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2019.

a) Subject Knowledge and understanding
Apart from providing training in the analysis of media representations, the Master of Arts in Media and Communications programme covers the latest media and communication trends and technologies, offering learning that contributes a combination of theoretical and practical skills. Students attending this course will be exposed to expertise in the different areas that comprise the umbrella title "communications", with subjects that go the whole gamut of intellectual and practical development. Core areas deal with research methodology, media within society, as well as with different manifestations of media and communications, for e.g. journalism, marketing communications (which includes advertising, public relations, etc), visual communications and design, film, and internet communications.
b) Intellectual development
Since students reading for a Master of Arts in Media and Communications must come from undergraduate studies in areas relevant to Media and Communications, this course offers them the possibility to hone abilities already learnt at undergraduate level to analyse media and communications in present-day society. Since this is an ever-changing phenomenon, particularly because of the continuous progress in technology that influences both new and legacy media, this analysis is essential to their ability to synthesise different ways in which to apply acquired knowledge to practical skills. This also leads to a continuous, circular process based on the exploration of needs, the development of solutions, the application of skills, and the evaluation of outcomes that reflect on future solutions. The course structure ascertains that students have the skills to analyse, apply, produce and evaluate, which leads to their choice of specialisation for the independent learning part of the Masters.
c) Key / Transferable skills
Master of Arts in Media and Communications students acquire: – the ability to carry out advanced research in the social science of communications; – skills in the different permutations of communications; – an awareness of and the ability to utilise in skillful ways the different manifestations of diverse media in society; – skills in areas that can be applied to practice, such as journalism, visual communications and design, internet communications, etc.
d) Other skills relevant to employability and personal development – Theoretical and practical skills in different areas of Journalism; – Marketing Communications skills that can be applicable to multiple career paths; – Design and visual thinking skills that pertain directly to careers pertaining to design, and indirectly to problem solving across various careers; – Internet communications skills that are indispensible to all careers that are in any way related to media and communications; – Film and Video Production skills that can be utilised in the film and television industries, in internet communications, as well as for video journalism.
The course is intended for graduates who are already in, or would like to make a career of any area that falls within Media and Communications. The taught component of the course supports an in-depth mastery of the different manifestations of media and communications, while the independent study component provides a platform for specialisation in any of the areas listed above. This course is intended for media professionals and all those who want an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon that dominates present day society.
Master of Arts in Media and Communications students can follow careers in any of the areas pertaining to this very important, overarching component of today’s society. Careers can be followed in any of the different branches of Journalism; in Design (Graphic Design, Editorial Design, Advertising Design, Design pertaining to Corporate Communications, etc.); Public Relations; Film and Video production; Marketing Communications; Social Media Marketing; Internet Communications; as well as in careers that involve research in Media and Communications.
