A first cycle degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in an area of study which the Board deems to be relevant to the proposed area of study. Applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class (Honours) or Category III may also be admitted, provided that they successfully complete the Preparatory Programme.

The admission of applicants may be made conditional on the result of an interview.

The course is based on research in areas of study pertaining to the contemporary and historic Mediterranean region, its geo-political zones of activity, its social, cultural and economic diversity and its ongoing political challenges and humanitarian concerns.

In the course of your activity, you will undertake research and field inquiry based on a sound training in critical approaches to past and present issues shaping and affecting the Mediterranean region, and its place in the world. The programme creates an ideal environment to interact, debate and contribute to the enhancement of knowledge in key areas of trans-regional Mediterranean Studies.

Institute provides supervisions for research in the following Key Research Areas:

  • Democratisation, Displacement and Development: Politics and Social Change in the Mediterranean
  • Body, Health and food: Paradigms of Sensuality in the Mediterranean
  • Belief, Identity and Exchange: Unity and Difference in the Mediterranean
  • Space, Narrative and Memory: Post coloniality and Representation in the Mediterranean

The Master of Arts in Mediterranean Studies (by research) is a transdisciplinary, research-led programme of studies in the rapidly growing field of Mediterranean Studies. The programme is based on research in specific, carefully chosen areas of study pertaining to the contemporary and historic Mediterranean region, its geo-political zones of activity, its social, cultural and economic diversity and its ongoing political challenges and humanitarian concerns. Research projects of a comparative and cross-disciplinary character are encouraged.

In the course of your activity, you will undertake research and field inquiry based on a sound training in critical approaches to past and present issues shaping and affecting the Mediterranean region, and its place in the world. The programme creates an ideal environment to interact, debate and contribute to the enhancement of knowledge in key areas of trans-regional Mediterranean Studies.

The research programme values a hands-on approach. You will join an established scholarly research community with strong international networks. The Institute provides supervisions for research in the following Key Research Areas:

  1. Democratisation, Displacement and Development: Politics and Social Change in the Mediterranean
  2. Body, Health and food: Paradigms of Sensuality in the Mediterranean
  3. Belief, Identity and Exchange: Unity and Difference in the Mediterranean
  4. Space, Narrative and Memory: Postcoloniality and Representation in the Mediterranean.

You will benefit from the Institute's signature Research Strategy, together with the Institute's regular stream of scholarly activity that includes academic conferences, seminars, workshops, round tables and other events of a public-outreach nature.

** Study-unit MDT5002 starts in Semester 2 of academic year 2023-24 and continues up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Mediterranean Institute.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Master and inquire into the critical, theoretical, historiographic and other literature pertaining to the current and historical Mediterranean and to the field of Mediterranean Studies
  • Acquire a sound knowledge and ability to apply research methodology and specialised reading practices in the area of Mediterranean Studies
  • Successfully engage in trans-disciplinary approaches and comparative exercises with a view to utilising these in life-skills, employment, early-career or further research contexts
  • Be in a position to critically engage the regionҳ rapidly evolving geo-political, economic, cultural, humanitarian and other contexts as they arise
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of critical issues and urgencies affecting the contemporary Mediterranean including their beginnings in the regionҳ specific past and present contexts
  • Apply any field research, specific projects of inquiry and critical readings to the urgencies, realities and contingencies affecting the region, with a view to contributing to future-gazing the possibilities for development of knowledge in the specific area of competence addressed by the respective project.

  • Be able to place their own research project within, and associate it with, the broader trans-national contexts and cross-cultural inflections that characterise the Mediterranean region
  • Be able to infer sound trans-historical, diachronic and synchronic analytical perspectives within their specific framework of research in the Mediterranean
  • Be able to construct interrogative, high-powered perspectives and to build intellectual capital with a view to achieving impact and translate oneҳ research into a broader public engagement and international dissemination of acquired knowledge
  • Accrue sufficient momentum towards possible further and doctoral research in Mediterranean Studies, with a view to contributing to the Instituteҳ developing research in the field
  • Identify and where appropriate, be able to offer cutting-edge analysis, engage in opinion-making and formulate agenda-setting ideas and creative ways forward for the problematics examined in the course of the research.
