The programme of studies is designed to develop the intellectual abilities of the students through the provision of study-units that promote deeper understanding of the current themes facing the cultural sector and its connection with tourism. As the statistics of tourism in Malta show, the number of visitors to cultural venues is on the rise and this is not a phenomenon peculiar to Malta. This segment of tourism needs professionals who know how to present and offer cultural products in the best way so as to offer a better service to more and more tourists and thus help to strengthen the industry in this segment. These professionals need to know the subject matter well and master its application so as to present a strong product to the interested tourist and be in a position to attract those who may as yet not be appreciative enough of the cultural products on offer. The areas of culture which the students will gain a deep knowledge and understand of include the built and rural heritage, cities of culture, artistic manifestations, traditions, legislation, Mediterranean culture, religious heritage, and cultural tourism.

The study-units aim at offering the students exposure to advanced research, innovation management techniques, cultural themes and their relation and application to tourism, a practicum and a dissertation. These topics will provide a breadth and depth of knowledge of pertinent subjects connected to the cultural tourism industry and its sustainability. In particular the units on innovative management techniques, themes in tourism and practicum will bring the student face-to-face with the current realities of the cultural and tourism sectors and their combination. In order to achieve this, students are expected to familiarise themselves with key texts, policy documents, white papers and other seminal documents prepared at national, regional or world level by organisations working in tourism and culture (such as UNWTO, UNESCO, EU and DG Enterprise). These documents will serve as the basis on which students will build the subject knowledge required to meet the aims and objectives outlined in this degree programme. This will also serve them when they enter into the world of work in the cultural and tourism sectors. The knowledge imparted and the understanding to be transmitted should contribute towards the creation of a professional corps of cultural operators who are also capable of translating their skills to the requirements of the cultural tourist.

The programme aims to:

1. provide a unique opportunity for the participants to explore the richness of the Mediterranean region, its peoples, heritage and culture from a multi-perspective approach;

2. create a solid academic set-up for those students wishing to deepen their understanding about the evolution of the Mediterranean mind-set, life, and structures;

3. encourage students to build on their established interest in the Mediterranean by developing their sensitivity to different aspects of the cultural and heritage diversity of the region and beyond, and of their relevance of cultural and heritage issues to identity formation;

4. provide students with personal and key skills enabling them to develop as independent and reflective individuals so that they may later contribute towards the continuous improvement of heritage and cultural activities of the region and beyond;

5. create the awareness that both heritage and culture are a segment of the tourism industry and the knowledge of how to integrate cultural aspects within the tourism product;

6. equip students with the right skills (including extrapolation, evaluation, empathy, interpretation, sense of direction, organisation, planning, coordinating, etc.) that a modern, efficient tourism industry requires – people who know how to take the right and strategic action as required.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of:

(a) a Bachelor degree from this University, or another recognised university, with at least Second Class Honours or Category II in Tourism Studies or in other related areas deemed suitable by the Board or

(b) a Bachelor degree from this University, or another recognised university, obtained with Third Class Honours or Category III, in Tourism Studies or related areas deemed suitable by the Board, provided that they have obtained other qualifications, including relevant experience, following their first cycle degree.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

The course is aimed at students who wish to become more aware of, and professionally involved in, the cultural and heritage tourism sectors. Also for those who would like to focus on each of the three main areas, these being, culture, heritage and tourism.
The course will reinforce the knowledge, skills and methods of those already operating in the sector thus giving them an edge over their competitors. It also provides a base for career advancement as the course puts one in an advantageous position with regard to the specialisation and knowledge base. Furthermore, those who wish to enter the cultural heritage and tourism sectors will have the right qualifications to be chosen or to set up their own enterprise. Further studies can lead to a Ph.D. with a specialisation in the areas being covered – such opportunities being offered by a large number of universities in the world, not least at the University of Malta.
