The MA in Vocational Education is targeted for qualified teachers seeking to upgrade their qualifications in vocational education, or those interested in migrating to careers within vocational. The course equips teachers with the knowledge and training in vocational teaching, work-based learning and applied subjects required to meet the demands of the teaching profession within a changing local education system, also considering the developments within the international context. Furthermore, the course offers further specialisation in the existing vocational subjects and new ones to be offered in schools. The course will be delivered through a combination of theoretical lectures, practical workshops, seminars and several industry-based study visits intended to expose teachers to the various aspects of vocational education and training. Teachers who follow this programme will acquire the theoretical foundations of vocational pedagogy and assessment and gain advanced practical skills and applied competences required for the professional delivery of vocational education within secondary education. In the first year, teachers opt for one of four areas of specialisation: Textiles and Fashion, Health and Social Care, Hospitality, or Engineering Technology. Study-units in each area of specialisation are related to pedagogy and skill. During the first and second year, there are core and compulsory study-units in pedagogy and assessment related to vocational education and teaching, and two industry field placements related to vocational education. As from the second year, teachers will choose either a study-unit related to the research component in preparation for a dissertation or one that is related to a group applied task. The third and final year is intended to focus on the research component - the dissertation.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:
(a) the degree of Bachelor of Education with at least Second Class Honours from this University, or
(b) a first cycle degree together with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from this University, or
(c) a degree from another higher education institution recognised as equivalent to the qualifications mentioned in (a) and (b) above.
Applicants in possession of an MQF Level 5 qualification comprising not less than 120 ECTS credits may be considered for admission, provided that such applicants provide evidence of a minimum of eight years’ teaching experience and provided further that they shall demonstrate the learning achieved by means of prior experience and certification through the evaluation procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning.
Applicants who do not meet the requirements for admission as specified in the above paragraphs may also be considered for admission, provided that such applicants can provide evidence of a minimum of twelve years’ teaching experience and provided further that they shall demonstrate the learning achieved by means of prior experience through the evaluation procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning.
The Board may also require applicants to sit for an interview during which their ability to successfully complete the Course with profit shall be assessed.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

By the end of the course, graduates will be able to:
- apply underpinning pedagogical theoretical concepts of vocational pedagogy and assessment when teaching VET subjects - deliver vocational subject knowledge through applied pedagogical approaches when teaching VET subjects - apply practical principles of work-based learning within a specific teaching vocational subject area - plan and conduct research within a chosen field of vocational education
(i) teachers with a warrant who are either upgrading their qualifications in the area of vocational education or others who are interested to teach a different subject other than the one they are currently teaching.
(ii) teachers with a teacher’s warrant with a minimum of 10 years teaching experience but who do not have a first degree.
The MA in Vocation Education will strengthen the graduates’ knowledge and skills as educators and researchers. It can help increase opportunities for advancement in the education sector, as practitioners and as trainers-of-trainers. It can also open careers or employment opportunities in community development and social entrepreneurship. The MA in Vocational Education also lays a good foundation for further studies at doctoral level or otherwise in the areas of education, sociology, work-based learning and human resource development.
