Educational research in the domain of Technical Design and Technology and Engineering Technology areas will push the knowledge base forward by helping to understand:
1. The variables involved in the uptake or downfall of studies (or courses) related to the technological subjects. 2. How to address common challenges that traditionally plague technological subject areas such as peoples’ negative perceptions or misinformation. 3. How to foster an updated philosophy of technology through better curriculum design, better use of school resources, better links with industrial entities, developing an authentic STEAM approach etc. 4. How to develop pedagogically sound practices for teaching and learning technological subjects. 5. How technology is learnt through informal activities. 6. The cognitive processes involved in the study of technological subjects and how these can be tapped to foster human development.
The following is a non-exhaustive list of research topics:
1. An investigation of the routes for employability of graduates with a degree in Technical Design and Technology. 2. The implementation of an A-level – issues and challenges. 3. The implementation of Design and Technology at primary level. 4. Developing a framework for the recognition of informal knowledge in technological subjects. 5. The differences and similarities between general education and vocational education within the technological subjects. 6. An investigation of transferable skills within technology education. 7. Developing a framework for valid and reliable methods for the assessment of project work in technology education. 8. Developing technological curricula for the use of modern tools e.g. 3D printers. 9. Investigating gender differences in the uptake of technologically related studies and professions. 10. Designing an image for technology education – how to address and target the perceptions of diverse audiences like students, parents, experts, policy makers, industrialists etc. 11. Evaluate the needs and demands for continuous professional development of teachers in the technological domains.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:
(a) a degree in Education with at least Second Class Honours from this University or a degree from another university recognised as equivalent for the purpose together with a minimum of one year’s teaching experience or
(b) any other degree with at least Second Class Honours together with a recognised teaching or education qualification and a minimum of one year’s teaching experience or
(c) a degree in Education or a Teacher’s Certificate together with at least five years’ teaching experience and other suitable qualifications obtained following the degree or after the Teacher’s Certificate or
(d) any first cycle degree with either a recognised teaching qualification or a Diploma in Education together with five years’ experience in an education setting.
Depending on the availability of resources, the Board shall determine the number of applicants that may be allowed to register. The Board shall announce the areas of study, the number of available places, and the criteria for selection of applicants at the time of the call for applications.
The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 2 students.
Applicants for registration under paragraphs (c) or (d) shall be required to attend an interview during which they shall be requested to provide evidence of prior experiential learning and to demonstrate that they are capable of completing the Course and may be required to complete a preparatory programme.
The preparatory programme shall comprise study-units to which not less than 30 credits and not more than 60 credits are assigned as directed by the Board, obtained with an average mark of 55% or better, prior to their registration to the Course.
Preparatory programmes shall also be governed by the Principal Regulations.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2019.

The student should be able to:
1. Adopt and implement an updated and research driven philosophy of technology. 2. Measure and assess levels of technological literacy in an audience. 3. Adopt diverse strategies to learn, teach and popularize technology. 4. Account for gender differences in the teaching or learning of technologically related subjects. 5. Develop sound theoretical frameworks for the implementation of learning or assessment of technologically related subjects.
The course should be particularly attractive for graduates possessing a B.Ed. in Design and Technology Education or other professionals who teach within the vocational area for technological subjects for example the curricular subject Engineering Technology.
Successful students can further pursue a postgraduate doctoral level in domains related to Technology Education.
