This course is intended to provide an advanced level of education, training and research for graduates in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Surgery and any other area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies. The course enables students to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills that could be employed in the academic and clinical setting. Students will be required to find a local supervisor and submit a research proposal upon applying in order for the application to be referred for consideration.

This Master of Science Course, which is mainly by Research, will allow candidates to specialize in their chosen area of studies. The core subjects of the course are Research Methods, Statistics and Research Practicals. The taught study-units will provide an introduction to Research Methods in the Health sphere with essentials of Health information, epidemiology, qualitative research methods and ethical concerns in Research. Students will also be provided with basic knowledge and skills for statistical input in Health Research. Basic Skills are also elaborated in practical sessions.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(a) the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, or

(b) the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or

(c) the degree of Master of Dental Surgery awarded from July 2018 onwards, or

(d) the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) with at least Second Class (Honours), or

(e) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Pharmaceutical Science) with a classification of Second Class Honours or better, or

(f) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the Faculty of Science, with at least Second Class (Honours), or

(g) at least a Second Class (Honours) degree in a discipline related to health science, or

(h) a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) to (f) above.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they produce sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme as specified below.

Preparatory Programme

The preparatory programme shall comprise study-units to which not less than 30 and not more than 60 credits shall be assigned.

Students shall be required to successfully complete the Preparatory Programme of study with an average mark of 55% or better, prior to their registration in the Course.

Preparatory programmes of study shall also be governed by the Principal Regulations.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.
