This programme brings together students from different faculties, each with a specific background knowledge that forms part of biomedical engineering (BME), with the aim of creating the necessary background for the future cross-disciplinary integration of engineering, biomedical, and clinical fields, to overcome existing bottlenecks in the area of BME and its application to health care activities. The heterogeneous cohort of students will be provided with all necessary skills, which will augment their capacity to appreciate, and understand each other, thus intensifing the collaborative work in multidisciplinary area of biomedical engineering. The multidisciplinary program is based on the expansion of engineering skills applied to biological systems and a solution of medical, pathological or trauma issues. This will encourage the innovative and creative approach to a problem solving strategy as there are no standard solutions since the medical expert deals with a unique individual patient.

This programme is offered as an interfaculty programme of the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(a) the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) from this University, or from any other higher education institution recognized by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class Honours or

(b) the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from this University or equivalent obtained from any other higher education institution recognized by Senate or

(c) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) from this University, or from any other higher education institution recognized by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class Honours in one of the following areas: Medical Biochemistry, Applied Biomedical Science (or Medical Laboratory Science), Physiotherapy, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or in another area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2021.

a. Subject Knowledge and understanding

Students will be able to:

1. understand and utilize academic research experience in defining and approaching problems in a methodical and systemic manner;
2. form a solid foundation to their expertise in their specialized field;
3. lead and collaborate with multi-cultural multi-disciplinary teams, connecting one's own disciplinary expertise to a wider context;
4. understand the complexity of human physiology and anatomy at the hierarchical level;
5. understand the effect of the load generated by daily life activities, appreciate medical; imaging, physiological signals, appreciate the different biomaterials and tissue properties;
6. perceive the necessity of regulatory framework and legislation related to biomedical devices.

b. Intellectual Development

Upon completion of the programme, the student obtains:

1. profound engineering/ technology basis for working in an international, competitive and highly innovative environment;
2. experience on how to write a project proposal;
3. insight on how to establish/manage the team of researchers to work on the project.

c. Key/Transferable skills

1. collect and analyze the necessary data, identify and describe the key factors of the problem;
2. propose solutions and critically evaluate the risks, consider all regulatory measures, and strategy to be implemented;
3. suggest/design the medical device/implant, identify and carry out suitable tests, followed by a complex analysis of the outcome.

d. Other skills relevant to employability and personal development

Upon completion of the programme, the student will be able to:

1. work collaboratively with others;
2. reflect on learning needs;
3. lead and collaborate multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams;
4. drive change and development activities in S&T;
5. communicate ideas and concepts both verbally and visually at operative and strategic levels;
6. participate in the biomedical professional community, including national and international organizations.
Engineering, medical, science and health care graduates with specialization that contributes to Biomedical Engineering as such. It aims to equip all students with multidisciplinary skills and knowledge needed to provide highly specialized, quality care to patients.
Abilities gained during the course are generic skills that do not apply only to the field of biomedical engineering, they can be transferred to any other engineering and medical activities.

With a prospect for the future development in Malta, these general skills, and knowledge gained are necessary for the development of a new biomedical industry that can support the local health care system and contribute to the wellbeing of the whole society. It provides the background for knowledge-based industry and an opportunity to establish new SME's based on a new research and medical technology development.
