The aim of this programme is to provide students with knowledge of advanced computer science topics, including recent research topics, and the necessary supervision to assist them in going through the scientific research process in relation to one of them. The topics include, but are not limited to: software system requirements specification and verification, computer graphics, computer security, and concurrent/distributed systems. The programme consists of 90 ECTS and utilises the summer semester. This allows students to complete the degree in one calendar year on a full time basis or in 20 months on a part time basis by using the middle summer semester.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:
(a) the degree of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Honours) - B.Sc. I.T. (Hons) - with at least Second Class Honours or
(b) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Information and Communication Technology - B.Sc. (Hons) I.C.T. - with at least Second Class Honours or
(c) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing Science or in Computer Engineering - B.Sc. (Hons) - with at least Second Class Honours or
(d) the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng.(Hons) - with at least Second Class Honours in a suitable area of study or
(e) any other Honours degree with a strong ICT component which the Board deems comparable to the qualifications indicated in (a), (b), (c) or (d) or
(f) a Third Class Honours degree in an ICT related area of study together with a professional qualification/s or experience as evidenced by a substantial portfolio of recent works, deemed by the University Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee, to satisfy in full the admission requirements of the Course or
(g) any other Honours degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours, provided that applicants would have successfully completed at least three individual study-units as directed by the Board, prior to being admitted to the Course.
The admission of applicants under paragraph (f) may be made conditional on the results of an interview conducted for the purpose.
Interviews, when necessary, shall be conducted by a board composed of at least three members.
Eligible applicants in terms of paragraphs (a) to (f) may register as visiting students for individual study-units, as directed by the Board, and obtain credit for them. Should applicants be accepted to join the Course within 5 years from following the first study-unit, the Board may allow the transfer of credits to the student’s academic record for the Course in lieu of comparable units in the current programme for the Degree.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

1. Knowledge, understanding, and intellectual development outcomes.
By the successful end of the programme students would have shown the capability to -
• Apply the most suitable technique(s) for solving specific computer science problems, and justify the their choice through argumentation or the implementation of the (partial) solution.
• Explore a number of research problems in specific areas of computer science and demonstrate the acquired knowledge through a dissertation proposal. Successful proposals contain in-depth analysis and comparisons of various existing experimental solutions presented in academic research papers, as well as a plan for further experimentation and the benefits of the potential results.
• Conduct a scientific research project in a chosen area of computer science along the lines of the dissertation proposal. Successful projects are ones that address a research problem by exploring experimental techniques/solutions while showing how the work fits into existing literature.
• Write academic reports through a dissertation that embodies: the context, aims, related work, solution, results of experiments/case studies/proofs, and the conclusions drawn from the research project.
Students that complete the programme successfully will be able to -
• Apply advanced computer science techniques to develop models and executable artifacts that meet industry or academic research requirements.
• Rate and recommend tools/methods/techniques for specific ICT problems and assist in their implementation as part of consultancy work.
• Provide the technical 'know-how' to a business venture that delivers software solutions whose competitive edge is drawn from the application of advanced computer science techniques.
• Assist in ICT research and development initiatives (industry, academic, or joint) through the following tasks (under supervision): research proposal writing and fund application, carry out scientific experiments or work on formal proofs, and writing of scientific papers.
• Write a research proposal as part of an application for a doctorate degree.
The prospective audience for this programme consists of ICT graduates, or graduates with degrees that have strong ICT components, who would like to further their studies in a computer science related specialization. Prospective students are expected to follow this course either as an immediate continuation of their studies, or resume their studies after having opted to spend time garnering work experience in the industry.
The course provides a healthy mix of units which collectively prepare the student for the needs of present day industry but also instil skills and concepts which enable the student to adapt easily to the continuously changing technological landscape. Graduates of this course would be prime candidates in the industry for positions of responsibility, both in a generic ICT context but more so in their respective area of specialisation. Typical roles would include software engineers, technical architects, test engineers, test automation architects, security auditors, security tool developers, device-driver developers, graphics developers and runtime verification engineers.
The course also enables graduates to apply for Ph.D. degree programmes in ICT related areas both locally and abroad.
