Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Built Environment Studies with at least Second Class (Honours) or
  2. a first cycle degree classified at least at Second Class (Honours) or Category II obtained from the University of Malta, or from any other higher education institution approved by Senate for this purpose in Architecture, Urban Design, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Conservation, Cultural Heritage Management, Built Heritage, Construction, Property Management, Built Environment, Environmental Design, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure or in any other area deemed relevant by the Faculty Board or
  3. a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board, to be comparable to the qualifications listed in (a) or (b).

Applicants in possession of a first cycle degree classified with Third Class (Honours) or Category III in any area of study indicated in (a) and (b), may also be allowed to join the Course provided that they are first admitted into a Preparatory Programme and they shall become eligible to join the Masterҳ course on successful completion of the Preparatory Programme, if an average mark of at least 55% is obtained.

Applicants may be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research via an extended interview and the submission of appropriate documentation, provided that where deficiencies are identified applicants shall be required to take specific study-units intended to compensate for the deficit.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to their application for the Course may also be admitted, provided that they provide sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Faculty Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a Preparatory Programme.

The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. The subject areas of this programme correspond to the Departments of the Faculty, and to the research interests and activities within each, including civil, structural, building engineering, architectural, building and conservation science, built heritage, architectural and urban design, planning and construction management, and interdisciplinary themes, in which guidance and supervision can be offered, and subject to the availability of resources as determined by the Faculty Board. You will typically follow a short-directed reading component, deliver a presentation related to the research, and embark on the preparation of a dissertation, based on work of an advanced or original nature that you will undertake.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2023-24 and continue up to the end of Summer Semester of academic year 2023-24.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify a research problem which you wish to explore.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in your chosen area of study.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the methods used in research and the conclusions derived.
  • Develop a proper literature review.
  • Translating the research questions into a set of aims and objectives.
  • Review key issues/aspects related to the use of the different research methodologies (surveys, interviews, focus groups, carrying out observations, etc.).
