The programme focuses entirely on the concepts relating to the development of a sustainable infrastructure, equipping you with tools that ensure that proposals related to infrastructural developments are assessed to factor sustainability issues.

The classic pillars related to the social, economic and environmental aspects and how these relate to the urban and built environment and the infrastructure to serve it, will underpin the background for the development of good policies in the field of sustainable infrastructure as well as how to assess the sustainability of policies which are being proposed in particular sectors to ensure that these contribute towards national and European targets. These will be complemented by horizontal issues related to governance, indicators and impact assessment together with statistics and research methodology.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of:

(a) a Bachelor's degree from this University with at least Second Class (Honours) in a discipline related to the Built Environment, Architecture, Civil or Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or in other related areas deemed suitable by the Board or

(b) a Bachelor's degree from this University with at least Third Class Honours in the disciplines highlighted in paragraph (a), if they are also in possession of other qualifications or at least 10 years of relevant work experience, obtained following the first cycle degree. The admission of applicants under this paragraph may be made conditional on the results of an assessment as the Board may deem appropriate or

(c) a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be comparable to the qualifications listed in paragraph (a). The admission of applicants under this paragraph may be made conditional on the results of an assessment as the Board may deem appropriate.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in February 2022.

• Appreciate the development of sustainable development from its origins to modern day developments at a local, European and international level.
• Widen participant knowledge from their traditional disciplines to a wider and integrative knowledge base.
• Gain an understanding of the application of economic, social and environmental impact assessment tools that may be used to test development proposals for sustainability concepts.
• Develop further appreciation of the various infrastructural components and to discuss these within a sustainability framework.
• Foster an appreciation of the public policy implications of sustainable infrastructure.

If you would like to enter a career in built environment, with a specific focus on sustainability and resilience, then this is the ideal course for you. With the knowledge and skills that you will gain, and the original research that you will contribute to existing literature in the field concerned, you will be a valuable employee aware of the needs and best approaches towards sustainable environment.
The course content of this programme may benefit both the private and public sector. Within the private sector it is envisaged that the learning outcomes would contribute towards better impact assessments of projects undertaken as well as to greening the design both from a construction perspective as well as from a process related one. From an educational perspective, this programme would enable a higher level of tailoring of sustainable development programmes and curricula as well as to promote effective communications in the field. Once again it is important to stress that this course of studies is horizontal in nature and can easily accommodate undergraduates from various backgrounds who can plug into the concept of sustainable development and to weave it with their background with a view to implement sustainable development concepts within their ultimate employment.

The public sector, on its part, has a great need for sustainable development professionals. The public administration covers a wide range of sectors such as land use, water and waste management, climate change, transport, education etc., all of which develop policies and implement programmes which would benefit from their characterisation in terms of ensuring that they too contribute towards the goal of sustainable development.

Whatever the walk of life you are working in, sustainable development and sustainability concepts need to form an integral part of the design, formulation, planning and implementation processes.
