Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

a first cycle degree from this University with at least Second Class (Honours) in a discipline related to Sustainable Energy or in any other area of study of the proposed research which the Board considers as appropriate, with a minimum of 240 ECTS credits, obtained in the ten years previous to registration for the Course or
a qualification and work experience deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in paragraph (a). The admission of applicants under this paragraph shall be made conditional on the results of an interview, provided that such applicants may be required to complete a preparatory programme as specified below.

Applicants may be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research via an extended interview and the submission of appropriate documentation, provided that where deficiencies are identified applicants shall be required to take specific study-units intended to compensate for the deficit.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than ten years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they produce sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

This programme of study is also offered on a full-time basis. Please consult the Registrar's website for more information pertaining to courses offered by the University.

This programme is designed if you are a science, engineering or/and architecture graduate. Topics covered include Renewable Energy Resources, Renewable Energy Technologies, Energy Efficiency, Energy Regulations, Policy and Economics, and Energy and the Environment. Research methods and project development also form part of this programme, which is organised in collaboration with the Faculty for the Built Environment and the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Electric Power Conversion of the Faculty of Engineering.

Students are required to obtain a total of 90 ECTS credits over a period of 5 Semesters of part-time study.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose a study-unit to the value of 5 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during the course.


Semester 1

Elective Units (Elective units are offered subject to availability, a minimum number of student registrations and time-table constraints)

ISE5101	Introduction to Sustainable Energy	5 ECTS
ISE5204	Energy Regulations, Policy and Economics	5 ECTS
* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continue up to the end of Summer Semester of academic year 2025-26.

Semester 2

ISE5105	Research Methods for Scientists and Engineers	5 ECTS

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Sustainable Energy - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Institute for Sustainable Energy.

The following are a sample of learning outcomes that you will acquire by the end of the course:

Assessment of the position of economies according to their energy resources.

Application of various techniques for experiment design and data analysis to real life situations.

Tackling of basic budgeting, writing and following up on checklists for successful project implementation and running.

Interpretation of sustainable mobilities.

Capacity to design experiments and perform them.
