The degree will help prepare you as a medical trainee in doing your basic surgical or anaesthetic training to develop your academic and scientific skills. It would also serve as a stepping stone to academia or also to higher surgical training, bridging the gap between the basic science and clinical fields of Medicine and Surgery.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(a) the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery or

(b) a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualification listed in paragraph (a).

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.

The programme will enable you to:

1. Describe the epidemiological principles in surgical practice.
2. Understand the various statistical techniques and apply them to data analysis.
3. Discuss research ethics and the application of law in terms of surgical practice.
4. Carry out a critical appraisal of the academic literature.
5. Explain the current knowledge of tumours including the use of tumour markers, tumour growth and spread, the surgical and other modes of treatment, and reconstruction following such treatment.
6. Discuss the prevention and treatment of sepsis in the surgical environment, including the ward, operating theatre and intensive care setting.

• an MD graduate, the majority of whom nowadays intend to specialise further and pursue a career in General Surgery or in one of the surgical specialties (such as Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Urology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Gastro-Intestinal, Colorectal and Plastic Surgery), and/or
• a Candidate intending to specialise in Anaesthesia and Orthopaedic Surgery,
