Archaeology

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an interview, held on a date which will be announced in due course. Once announced, this date cannot be changed. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' is 31 August 2024 at 2pm.

Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio. Further information about the Portfolio will be forwarded to applicants.

Applicants wishing to join the part-time mode must submit their application as full-time, and then include a note in the comments box of the application form, denoting their preference to be considered for the part-time option. Such requests will be considered by the Board of the Faculty.

Classics

Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio. Further information about the Portfolio will be forwarded to applicants.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. Archaeology

The programme in Archaeology teaches how the human past can be understood and studied through anachronistic materials that remain present in modern day. During your course of studies, we will provide you with the academic knowledge required to understand how archaeology is a necessary and important area through which modern society can learn about primitive or ancient societies and cultures on a global scale. We offer a Mediterranean archaeological perspective where you will have the opportunity to put to practice the concepts and theories learned into our field work unit offered during summer recess. We will also encourage you to undergo the Erasmus+ mobility programme, as we believe that a diversified and multi-cultural experience through international learning will provide you with a more refined learning outcome.

Classics

In this programme of study, the 'Classics' is used as an umbrella term that will take you back to Ancient Greece, where you will academically familiarise yourself with the mythology, society, literature and linguistics, history and art of the Greek Islands. During your course of studies you will be able to have a basic understanding of the Greek and Latin languages and read key texts in their respective original languages. You will be able to understand the influence that this ancient world has had on our contemporary one, while also enriching your cultural and historic mindset by participating in interdisciplinary action. You are also encouraged to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility period, for a multicultural and diversified learning experience.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Archaeology

Upon successfully completing the course, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge by:

Showing an understanding of the different material foundations of human experience through different time periods and cultures.
Gathering, synthesizing, and analysing ambiguous data sources.
Having the critical capacity to engage thoroughly in discussions and debates about archaeological interpretive data.
Writing and researching concisely and accurately about ideas relating to the subject matter.
Understanding key methodological and theoretical concepts related to the subject matter.

Classics

By the end of the course, you will be expected to:

Demonstrate proficient lexical and grammatical knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages.
Be competent in reading and interpreting classical texts and appreciate certain unique qualities of the original classical literature untranslated.
Show an understanding and appreciation towards classical civilization in its historical, literary and cultural contexts.
Show competency in composing critical and analytical essays or papers regarding the subject matter.
Participate in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary discussions and link the importance of Classical studies with modern society and relevant fields.

Archaeology

As a graduate of this course, you will have career opportunities both locally and abroad, in which your valuable knowledge on the subject will be demonstrated. You will be able to pursue a career as an archaeologist, conservator, heritage manager, historic buildings inspector or conservation officer, museum/gallery curator, tourism officer, records manager, archivist, cartographer and as a social research. If you are interested in furthering your studies, or are considering an academic career in archaeology, then we encourage you to enrol in a postgraduate course offered at our University, where you will be able to hone your knowledge and gain a holistic understanding of the subject.

Classics

Upon successfully completing this course, you will have a variety of career opportunities where you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge in the field. Careers, both locally and abroad, can be as an archivist, barrister, editorial assistant, heritage manager, museum or gallery curator, market researcher, Higher education lecturer and media. If you are interested in furthering your studies or would like to pursue an academic career, then we encourage you to enrol in a postgraduate course that our University offers for a more refined and holistic learning experience.
