B.A. (Hons) Politics and Governance has two main objectives:

• To contribute to the political formation of citizens who are actively engaged in Maltese public life, through political parties, journalism and the social media, local councils, communities, civil society associations, non-governmental organisations and business associations.

• To reach out to occupational and social groups for whom politics and governance are central concerns, but who have hitherto been under-represented in the programmes on public policy, public management and public policy leadership.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of the Higher Diploma in Political Studies of this University or a comparable qualification in an area related to Politics and/or Governance, or who have obtained ECTS credits for study-units considered by the Board of Studies to be equivalent to those in the programme of study.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2021.

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
• learn about Politics as a discipline i.e. its principal theoretical frameworks and applications, conceptual vocabulary, methods of inquiry, its major sub-fields of study and its inter-relationships with other social science fields.
• comprehend the concepts of political systems (national and international), their history, philosophical, constitutional, and legal foundations, leading political values and ideas.
• assess diverse political systems around the world, institutions, electoral processes, and the changing domestic and global contexts within which they operate.
• analyse the role of political actors in shaping and defining politics, the application of politics in historical and contemporary life and the multifaceted dimension of governance.
• assess current and past political phenomena and apply thinking skills to discern decision-making and diverse political contexts.
• develop a critical perspective of political occurrences.
• identify scientific methods of inquiry and apply them to specific research questions supported by structured methodology and application of theory.
• ability to connect trends and patterns when reading political scenarios.
• participate in class debates and discussions.
• articulate arguments, spoken and written, with a view towards the clear expression of learned opinions.
• This course is intended for those who wish to further their career; those who have a keen interest in politics and governance; aspiring politicians, political activists; Activists on social media, in human rights organisations, environmental and social NGOs, local councils and community leaders; People seeking to work in EU or public Institutions.

It is also intended for students who aspire for a rewarding career in Politics, Public Sector, Local Governance, and the European Union.
The students will be able to:
• specialise in a variety of disciplines at postgraduate level
• diversify their employment opportunities in the political arena and different public or EU institutions
• acquire additional relevant skills such as facing an audience, interviewing skills and/or note taking.
