Students registering for the course shall be required to indicate their choice of a second Main Area of study to be taken with Theology at the time of applying for admission.

Students for the Theology and Human Studies degree shall be required to register and obtain credits for study-units to which a total of not less than 180 ECTS credits are assigned, of which not less than 94 ECTS credits shall be obtained from the Theology programme of study, not less than 80 ECTS credits from the programme of study of the second Main Ordinary area of study and 6 ECTS credits in optional study-units.


The Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Human Studies programme meets a variety of educational needs through the combination of Theology with a number of areas of humanistic studies. It provides a good base for students wishing to qualify as teachers of Religion at secondary school level (after pursuing studies in a teacher training course).

It is also intended for students who would like to prepare for church or community related work, including work in religious tourism, through the combination of Theology with Sociology, Psychology, Communication Studies, Philosophy, History or a language subject.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme
The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2023.

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

Knowledge Understanding
• Understand and accept the Sacred Scripture as God’s revelation throughout the history of the Jewish people in the Old Testament right up to the culmination of revelation in Jesus Christ
• Understand the relationship between philosophical and theological reflection, spiritual growth, and witnessing to faith
• Recognize and appreciate the contribution of the important thinkers on the subject

Application Understanding
• Explain, having examined in detail, Christian beliefs about the Trinitarian God, the Incarnation, and the History of Salvation
• Explore the revelation inherent in the Christian religion
• Investigate the interplay between faith, reason and revelation

Communication Skills
• Communicate theologically-based responses on the Bible and the Teachings of the Church
• Communicate and adapts the Christian message according to the social context
• Explain in detail the major developments that occurred in the Church and in theology as the Church sought to keep the Christian tradition alive throughout the ages
• Express how their beliefs, values, faith and culture shape their actions and attitudes

Judgmental Skills
• Critically analyze different views concerning religious experience
• Examine and questions one’s own spiritual life
• Respond to queries related to faith and belief

Learning Skills
• Acknowledge the inter-relationship between spiritual and human development

The Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Human Studies has a flexible structure to meet a variety of educational needs through the combination of theology with a number of areas of humanistic studies.
Holders of this degree may be eligible to register for second-cycle programmes leading to Master’s Degrees.
Students who wish to participate in an ERASMUS exchange are encouraged to do so during the first semester of the second year of the course.
