Applicants in possession of a pass in the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) or the MCAST Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences, together with the MCAST Level 5 Award in Health Sciences shall be considered as having satisfied the general entry requirements.

During the first year of the Course, students are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

The overall aim of the B.Sc. (Hons.) in Nursing programme is to prepare you to become first-level nurses capable in providing effective evidence-based patient-centred care. This course aims to provide you with an understanding of nursing's distinct knowledge base as well as knowledge derived from the other life and social sciences. It also aims to equip you with the ability to perform the required clinical skills competently and in full knowledge of the current evidence. It is in view of this that this course comprises both theoretical and practical components, with a diversified content that is designed to develop your ability to draw upon the various types of knowledge, the appropriate skills and an understanding of your specific personal wishes, to guide the appropriate nursing action in a variety of settings. The programme conforms to the EU's Directives on Nursing Education, securing recognition across EU member states.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

This programme of study is governed by The General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor of Science (Honours) - B.Sc. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The course aims to:

  • Prepare you as a prospective nurse by instilling critical thinking, knowledge and reflection, in order to be able to practice in a professional and an accountable manner.
  • Provide you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes central to nursing.
  • Instil you with evidence-based interventions in a variety of health care environments.
  • Provide you with the interpersonal skills to be key members of the multidisciplinary team within any health care setting.
  • Prepare you to understand the importance behind the principles of accountability in your implementation to improve the care and wellbeing of a patient.

On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Malta Council for Nurses and Midwives. As a graduate nurse, you will be employable in a variety of health care settings, such as the community and occupational health care settings, and engage in a variety of roles, such as management and policy development roles. Employment and educational opportunities are prevalent across all sectors. The successful completion of the undergraduate programme also renders you eligible for enrolment on to Master's programmes of studies.
