With concerns over health issues, physical activity and sport have become key requirements in everyone’s lifestyle. Policy makers at local and European levels, are actively promoting sport and physical activity – not only with the view of improving health and physical wellbeing, but also to enhance the role that sport can play in boosting social cohesion, for its educational value and for economic reasons. It is therefore crucial that a clear understanding of the value of sport is gained in order to determine ways of improving the services in this sector. This degree course will equip students with the necessary skills to address the challenges of delivering quality sport and physical activities and their benefits to individuals, communities and societies.

This B.Sc (Hons) in Sport and Physical Activity will surpass disciplinary limits in order to adopt a holistic approach to sport as a tool for development. Various components will be emphasized throughout the course with an emphasis on the development of the different personnel involved in sporting and physical activities. A particular emphasis on coaching and sport development responsibilities within the physical activity, sport and leisure sector will be made.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants admitted under paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Board that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit. The eligibility of such applicants shall be decided by the Board, following an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose. The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three persons.

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to attend an interview and sit for an English Proficiency Test to be held on 3 September 2020. This date cannot be changed. Such applicants shall be exempted from sitting the proficiency test if they are in possession of a pass at SEC level English at Grade 3 or better or equivalent.

Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Sport and Leisure Studies may also be admitted to the Course. Subject to the provisions of the Principal Regulations, such applicants may be allowed by the Board to transfer the credits obtained in the Diploma to the Course. The number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 90 ECTS credits.

All applicants shall:

(a) submit a medical fitness certificate, as per prescribed form provided by the Institute of Physical Education and Sport, dated not earlier than two months prior to the submission of the application
(b) submit a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued by the Commissioner of Police and
(c) submit documented evidence pertaining to any relevant experience listed on the appropriate form provided by the Institute of Physical Education and Sport.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 20 students.

When the number of applicants that may be admitted to the Course is limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, the Board shall make an initial ranking according to the following criteria, the weighting of which shall be published at the time of the call for applications:

(a) academic qualifications and
(b) experience in the field of Physical Education and Sport.

Candidates who fall within the limited number plus the next 25% (of the limited number of students) shall be called in for an interview. The final ranking shall be made on the totalling of the scores acquired in the initial ranking plus the mark acquired for the interview.

The interviewing board appointed by the Board for the purpose, shall be composed of at least 3 members.

For the purpose of selection, applicants whose qualifications were obtained by 31 August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first. If vacant places are still available, applicants who obtain all necessary qualifications after the 31 August and before the 30 September shall be considered to take up the remaining places.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

This 3-year full-time programme will be taught through diverse methods, including lectures, practical based sessions both at University and field-based, together with seminars and supervised independent research. The course is to endow students with both lecturer-led tuition and experiential learning, with a focus on linking theory and practice. Whilst the value of a good knowledge of subject theory will be emphasized, this will be taught with a view to ensuring that students make the link to applicability in practice. Throughout the course, the students will also be taught by various experts in the field and will have the opportunity to benefit from their knowledge and experience. The purpose behind this approach is to prepare students to learn from different perspectives to the subject matter.

This approach will enhance students' intellectual development, as, in addition to being taught specific course content, students will also be trained in becoming flexible and versatile, in learning to learn, and in learning to deal with areas outside their direct usual routine. They will also acquire skills in absorbing and processing knowledge of different kinds and presented in different ways.

This course will provide students with:

• Sound academic knowledge of Physical activity and sport science,

• Knowledge related to the coaching at different levels and ages,

• Knowledge related to the administration and management of sports,

• A sound knowledge of the local and European context, together with an understanding of other international perspectives,

• An opportunity to work hands-on in the area to develop the skills and gain experience of both sport development and coaching,

• A foundation in the design and implementation of empirical research,

• Opportunities for pursuing areas of particular individual interest through a research project,

• A thorough understanding of sport policies.


This programme will give a better understanding of physical activity and sport and their role in society. Students will be expected to engage in discussion during the taught units and they will be encouraged to read further on every issue tackled so as to understand it better. Content to be covered in this programme will vary from human anatomy and physiology, sport and leisure management, nutrition, sport policy, diversity and inclusion, sociology, psychology, pedagogy, media in sport, history of sport and Olympic values. Professional Development will be a key issue which is central to the approach taken in the lectures and the practical sessions.
Students will carry out placements in different sport and physical activity settings throughout the three years of the course. During these placements, students will gain valuable experience and they will have the opportunity to apply their learning in real-life situations, thus enhancing their career opportunities.

Through placements students will learn to:

• apply the sports science knowledge learned during theoretical sessions into practice,

• deliver effective sessions with children, youth or adults of different ages and abilities,

Promote physical activity and sport,

• encourage players’ creativity and energise players through effective communication,

• assist participants in the development of social, cognitive and affective domains.

• develop their leadership, management and organisational skills in a sports context,

• learn how to work in collaboration with other administrators and managers at different levels within their organisation,

• learn how to communicate with parents and participants,

• gain experience in planning and co-ordinating events and sport programmes.
The course is aimed at any student who would like to pursue a career in the sport and physical activity sectors.

This programme is open to all those interested in sport in its different contexts – whether in clubs, community or other similar educational institutions. It is aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of the different personnel who already work in the field of sport and physical activity or who would like to start a career in these sectors.
Graduates of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Sport and Physical Activity programme will be equipped with a sound grounding and an in-depth knowledge and skills of the different fields of sport and physical activity. They will also gain an understanding of the different core elements of the social, psychological, policy, legislative and managerial frameworks that are imperative in the sports field. Consequently, graduates will be in a position to join professionals in addressing the different challenging issues that arise in the sport world in relation to the constant changes that are happening in society. They will be able to bring innovative skills to the job both from the theoretical and practical point of view.

Potential employers include the state sector, such as SportMalta, the private sector industry investing in sport and leisure, educational institutions, and the voluntary sector including sport organisations.

Graduates of this programme will have the option of pursuing other courses at a higher level either offered by the University of Malta or overseas.
Students who wish to participate in an ERASMUS exchange are encouraged to do so during the first or second semester of the second year of the course.
