The Certificate in Foundation Studies in Science, Engineering and ICT will provide students with the knowledge as well as the personal and inter-personal skills and organisational framework, upon which to base their future undergraduate engineering/architecture/ICT and science studies.

The primary aim of the course is to provide these students with the knowledge base, transferable skills, linguistic skills and general competence to allow them to progress successfully onto the University of Malta's undergraduate Engineering, Architecture, ICT and Science (Math and Physics) courses. The course offers specific training and support in those core science and English areas where these students require further assistance.

The course will provide teaching in the subject areas of mathematics, physics, computer science (including basic programming) and English. In addition, students will be expected to attend regular tutorial sessions for each subject. During the tutorial sessions students will be expected to show evidence of adequate revision of the week's work. At the same time, tutorials are intended as scheduled learning sessions in which students will receive training in how to apply their knowledge base and practice their language and communication skills.

The course will include continuous assessments to build up a realistic profile of the student's abilities. Tutors will be required to assess students periodically. As the course progresses and the level of spoken and written English improves and the mastery of subject content improves, students will be expected to show evidence of higher analytical and evaluation skills.

Skills such as the student's ability to apply their knowledge base, to show evidence of self-directed learning and attitude during tutorials will be assessed in the first and second semesters. Practical laboratory sessions will be carried out and will have a weight in some of the study units’ final assessment.

Student performance will be monitored continuously by the area coordinator and feedback will be provided through the course tutors. This will allow an awareness of the student's approach to learning and the identification of students who are encountering difficulties, so that remedial action such as the offer of small group coaching can be provided.

The Course shall be open to all applicants who:

(a) present a secondary and/or high school certificate issued abroad and who studied within an educational system that is not comparable to the Maltese educational system (in terms of curriculum, years of study, etc.) and

(b) are in possession of one of the following qualifications in English at the required level:

(i) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-Based Test (iBT) with an overall score of 61, and a minimum score of 17 in the reading and writing components or
(ii) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an overall band score of 5.5, with a reading and writing score of at least 5.0 or
(iii) Cambridge First Certificate at grade C or better or
(iv) any other equivalent qualification approved by the Admissions Board and

(c) are in possession of qualifications allowing access to an undergraduate course in the selected discipline in the country where such qualifications originate, but

(d) are deemed to require further study to be admitted to undergraduate degree courses at the University of Malta.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2019.

The course will provide students with:

• A sound scientific knowledge of mathematics, physics and computer science at an advanced school leaving level

• The reading, writing, listening and critical thinking skills necessary to function effectively as a student of engineering, architecture, ICT or science (maths and physics) at the University of Malta;

• Training to apply scientific reasoning skills to the evaluation of physical results;

• Grounding in the use of grammar and logic together to precisely understand questions in English and differentiate between similar statements and ideas;

• An understanding of how to apply formal logic to scientific problems;

• Opportunities to think and reason more effectively in the abstract.
The Certificate in Foundation Studies in Science, Engineering and ICT is specially designed to enable students who have completed their secondary and/or high school education abroad within an educational system that is not comparable to the Maltese educational system (in terms of curriculum, years of study, etc.) and aims to provide the support needed to enable such applicants to move from a fully structured educational environment (in high school) to the attitudes, knowledge and skills required of Engineering, Architecture, ICT and Science (Math and Physics) students at the University of Malta.
