Applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations.

The Certificate Course may be taken concurrently with any University undergraduate or postgraduate course, whether followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

This course is open to both University of Malta current students and General Public.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. The programme of study is intended to follow closely the curriculum of the Instituto Cervantes, the foremost institution worldwide in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. Setting aside Chinese, there are more native speaks of Spanish in the world than there are of any other language. As an increasing number of people use IT to connect with others across the globe for work and pleasure, Spanish is the language of choice after English, which renders you at an advantageous position in both your personal and professional life.

Requirement for award of Certificate in Language Proficiency (Spanish): 30 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Certificate in Language Proficiency and the Diploma in Language Proficiency under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand accurate and idiomatically effective Spanish.
  • Refer to your insight into contemporary Hispanic societies and cultures in Spain and the Americas.
  • Communicate and understand spoken and written Spanish.
  • Articulate coherent ideas and arguments in oral and written mediums.
  • Combine organised independent study with effective group work.
  • Function in a Spanish-speaking environment.

Non EU Applicants:

If students are following a FT course at UM - No fees apply.
If students are not following a FT course at UM - Total Tuition Fee: €4,250. Yr1 - €1,420 - Yr2 - €1,420 - Yr3 - €1,410

By the end of the course, you will have an international qualification in the shape of the Instituto's DELE exams, over and above the University of Malta's own Certificate in Language Proficiency (Spanish).
