The Higher Diploma in Aviation is intended for ab-initio and professional pilots who seek to develop or strengthen their career path by following an MQF Level 5 University programme that will provide them with an excellent balance between theoretical understanding and technical insight into the operational environment of the modern pilot. This approach will afford students a deeper insight into their profession, allowing them to take better decisions in the field whilst also giving them a competitive advantage in their career.

Delivered by experts in their respective fields, the course will provide an introduction to the fundamental engineering principles associated with aviation and then builds on this to address, with the academic rigour of a higher diploma, the technical and operational aspects associated with flying. It is intended to complement the ground instruction and flying training provided by flying schools leading to EASA Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), Multi-crew Pilot Licence (MPL) or equivalent, providing a more professional understanding and insight into the technical and operational matters associated with flying modern large transport aircraft. Running on a part-time day-course basis over two years, it can be followed by student pilots in parallel with their pilot training courses as well as by licenced pilots who are already flying operationally.

Topics covered include fundamentals of electrical, mechanical and computer engineering, mathematics and statistics, theory of flight, principles of aircraft structures and design, avionics and aircraft communication systems, air traffic management, navigation, automation and human factors in the cockpit. Credit will be given to students for the ground and flying training that they will have covered externally during their studies leading to EASA ATPL, MPL or equivalent.
To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admissions Regulations, be in possession of a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Physics.

If not already in possession of an EASA/FAA-issued Air Transport Pilot License, applicants must be enrolled on a pilot training course leading to such a qualification, or equivalent, within six months of the start of the Course.

If applicants have other qualifications considered to be sufficient, they may be exempted by the University Admissions Board, on the advice of the Institute Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these special course requirements.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2018.

By the end of the programme the student will be able to:

• Explain the fundamental scientific and engineering principles behind aircraft and their systems;
• Explain the fundamental phenomena associated with powered flight;
• Work out theoretical performance calculations relating to fixed wing aircraft;
• Explain the principles and operational processes of air traffic management, the challenges it faces to cope with a continual increase in global air traffic and the emerging technologies intended to mitigate these challenges;
• Explain the fundamental phenomena relating to radio communication systems;
• Describe the theory and principles of operation of various aircraft avionics systems;
• Explain the merits of different aircraft configurations and describe the design of standard aircraft structures;
• Describe the role of the pilot and automation in the modern cockpit and discuss human factors and human-machine interaction issues on the flight deck;
• Assess potential failure paths in flight and describe the systems, processes and procedures that are in place to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure flight safety.
The course is intended for ab-initio and student pilots who are enrolled for a pilot course leading to an EASA ATPL, MPL or equivalent, and for pilots who are already in possession of such licences and seeking to enhance their professional career.
Formal University education in the field of direct relevance to the aviator will provide graduates of the Higher Diploma in Aviation with a deeper understanding of the theoretical and operational aspects associated with their profession, thus giving them an edge in their portfolio in a competitive environment.
