The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of either:

a Bachelor's degree in Dance or a Dance-related subject, with at least Second Class (Honours) or placement in Category II or
a Bachelor's degree in a subject other than Dance or a Dance-related subject, with at least Second Class (Honours) or placement in Category II, together with substantial proven Dance experience or
a professional qualification/qualifications and/or experience deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to satisfy in part, the admission requirements to the Course, provided that applicants may be required to complete a preparatory theoretical programme as specified below.

All applicants who are not in possession of a first degree in Dance shall be interviewed and/or auditioned by a board composed of at least three members. Applicants shall be asked to provide evidence of their professional experience in dance by way of writing sample, performance documentation and video. Applicants unable to attend the interview and dance audition in person may arrange to complete the process through electronic means of communication.

Preparatory Programme

The preparatory programme shall comprise study-units to which 30 credits are assigned and shall also be governed by the Principal Regulations.

Students shall be required to successfully complete the preparatory programme of study with an average mark of 55% or better prior to their registration for the Course.

The preparatory programme is aimed to ensure that you will gain the required standard for admission to the course leading to the degree of Master in Performance Studies (Dance), since the course is intended if you do not possess a first degree in Dance or a Dance-related subject. As an interested applicant, you should have existing knowledge and skills in practical studies of Dance, as the programme will focus specifically on Study Skills, with ideas and concepts drawn from Dance Analysis and Dance History to form the fundamental basis of preparatory study. You will be given a handbook containing all the details of the course and will be given regular on-line tutorials and feedback through individual and group skype sessions. You are expected to commit at least 10 hours weekly to your individual study. All assignments should be completed by the end of July in the year of study.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master in Performance Studies (Dance) under the auspices of the School of Performing Arts.

By the end of the course, you will:

Have the basic foundation to be allowed to enrol in the Master in Performance Studies.
Understand basic theoretical and practical principles related to the variety of performance.
Have a basic understanding of contemporary dance contexts.
Be able to grasp the foundation of dance interpretation and techniques associated with it.
Be historically aware of 20th Century dance.
