Information for International applicants

Applicants are required to be in possession of one of the following:

  1. passes at Grade 3 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination in six subjects, including Maltese, English Language and Mathematics or
  2. passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in six subjects, including: Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and either Biology or Health and Social Care, together with a pass at Advanced Level in any other subject or
  3. the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) or the MCAST Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences, or equivalent.

    Applicants are further required to be aged not less than 18 years within three months following the date on which the Preparatory Course commences.

During the first semester of the Preparatory Course, accepted applicants are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment, so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

This Preparatory Course is intended if you do not have the required entry qualification to pursue a degree programme in nursing. The aim is to equip you with the key skills that would secure admission to, and additionally prepare you for successful engagement in the undergraduate degree in nurse education. You will be eligible to be admitted to the Preparatory Course for the Nursing area of study if you are in possession of the requirements for admission as outlined in the Admission and Progression Requirements section. As a successful candidate, you will follow the programme of study for the Preparatory Course as directed by the Board of Studies. The main objectives are to teach you academic skills, nursing as a profession and basic biomedical sciences. You will then be able to successfully complete the course and start your path for a nursing profession.

In addition to the compulsory study-units (48 ECTS), students are required to choose 12 ECTS from the elective study-units, to a total of 60 ECTS.

By the end of the course, you will be:

  • Equipped with academic skills that are consistent with degree level education.
  • Introduced to the nature and core elements of the nursing profession and the practice of being a qualified nurse.
  • Enabled to equip yourself with the required basic knowledge in the biomedical sciences.
  • Engage in degree level education in a satisfactory manner.
  • Develop an understanding of the role and contribution of the nurse in modern health and social care systems.
  • Better understand the pathophysiology of disease and its management, as taught in the Degree programme in Nursing.

    If you successfully complete all credits included in the preparatory programme and obtain a final average mark of at least 55%, you will be able to progress to the B.Sc. (Hons) in Nursing offered by the Department of Nursing within the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta.
