Presently a number of people working or voluntarily providing a service within sports clubs in coaching, administering, and managing sports institutions are not qualified in the areas they are involved and working in. The course focuses on the pedagogical issues needed for all people involved in coaching and managing athletes and sports clubs. The Foundations In Coaching course provides insight on the areas needed for the better running, leading and managing of sports clubs and sports people. Successful completion of the course provides qualification and raises the standards of the sports community and the quality of services rendered.
(a) are in possession of passes in five subjects at Grade 5 or better at Secondary Education Certificate level, including English Language, Maltese, Mathematics and any other two subjects, or equivalent qualifications as approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board
(b) shall be not less than 18 years of age within 3 calendar months from the commencement of the Course and
(c) produce certification with regard to their prior or current involvement in Physical Education and/or Sport.
Applicants who apply without the requested qualifications listed in the above paragraphs shall not be required to sit for the assessments of the study-units and shall be awarded a certificate of attendance, provided that they have attended 80% of the lectures.
Applicants who would have reached the age of 23 by the beginning of the Course may be admitted, provided that they shall be required to attend an interview by the Board before being accepted for the Course.
The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

Foundations In Coaching course provides insight and discussion on a number of themes and areas. Content is divided in 4 areas of study: Sports Pedagogy, Sports Science, Socio-Psychological Perspectives and Micro Coaching. Themes and content are hereunder listed:

- Nutrition - Fitness and its Assessment - Conditioning and Training
- The Child - The Learning Process /Domains - Mini Game Philosophy
- Prevention of injuries and recovery - The Human Body - Basic First Aid
- Self confidence and Self esteem - Protecting the child - Risk Assessment - Coaching people with special needs
- Micro Coaching
The course is targeted for all those wanting to pursue careers and enrollment within coaching, leading and administering jobs and for those performing voluntary work within sports institutions. Athletes, retired athletes, administrators, managers, and all people wishing to explore the realms of coaching, and working with athletes are targeted for this course.
The Foundations in Coaching is a course which helps qualify people in the areas of coaching and sports management within sports clubs. Successful candidates are awarded a certificate of successful completion endorsed by the University of Malta and Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport (KMS). This qualification allows people to work* within the coaching sectors within local sports clubs. Completion of this course helps students in furthering their sports studies. Although the Foundations In Coaching is not a pre-requisite for other sport related courses, it is an asset when applying for courses at Diploma level and other Sport related studies at other levels.
