French Language
Students registered to read European Studies as a main area of study are strongly encouraged to gain proficiency in the French language and culture. To facilitate this, the Department of French of the Faculty of Arts offers them the possibility of registering for the French courses listed below. They are to start at the level appropriate to their qualifications as guided by the Department of French. A total of not less than 8 and not more than 10 ECTS credits taken during the second and third year will count as part of the European Studies component. These study-units are available to four categories of students:
a) Those who have at least Grade C at A-Level French but who do not take French as a secondary area of studies,
b) Those who are in possession of an A-level at any pass or intermediate level or O-level French,
c) Those who have completed study-units from the French Language Proficiency Course in the first year of their course depending on their level,
d) Those who have no French at all but wish to start it.
The study-units indicated below are not available to students taking French as a main area of study or as a subsidiary area with European Studies.
Wherever it is indicated that the choice of study-units depends on the students' level, students are required to consult with Dr Marilyn Mallia at the Petite Auberge (OH103) personally or by email (marilyn.mallia@um.edu.mt) or with Ms Karen Camilleri (kcami09@um.edu.mt). Students may need to sit for a test to determine their level.

In Year I, European Studies students following this programme are to register for 4 or 5 ECTS credits which are to be taken from the optional study-unit component.
a) The courses in the B.A. programme of studies are available to students in possession of at least Grade C at A-level and who wish to pursue this French programme. In order to work on their language skills, it is recommended that students choose

However, at the end of this study-unit, they will not normally be sufficiently qualified to go on with the French Programme for European Studies students offered in the second and third years. They may however pursue their studies in French by registering for a “Degree Plus” study-unit in the French language suited to their level.
