DESCRIPTION | Participants will be given a placement at an adult education centre and will teach for 15 hours. They will be assessed on their teaching skills, preparation and personal evaluation. They will be given three preparatory sessions, by Professor Carmel Borg, focusing on: see aims below. Study-unit Aims: Helping the candidates prepare, in terms of: (a) attitude; (b) remote preparation (clear objectives regarding what they intend to teach); (c) developing a healthy rapport with the host agency and the adult learners, as well as surrounding community; (d) adult education approach drawing on the learners’ ‘existential situation’. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - obtain first hand experience of teaching adults in an adult learning setting, to engage in thorough preparation for this purpose and to indulge in self-evaluation with a view to honing their adult education abilities; - understand ways of adapting to different adults' needs; - understand communities providing the backdrop to specific learning sites; - understand different power dynamics involved in teaching adults. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - work with adults; - show an understanding of specific communities of practice; - relate what is investigated, hopefully co-investigated with learners, to the cultural backgrounds, preoccupations and aspirations of the adult students as well as (where and when necessary) the surrounding local community; - move from the ‘occasional motive’ to the ‘profound motive’ (Lorenzo Milani) i.e from matters that immediately capture the learners’ interest to higher level learning.
