DESCRIPTION The general theoretical framework of second language acquisition and teaching is presented, with specific reference to the teaching of Italian. A historical outline of teaching second languages will be presented and emphasis will be placed on the communicative approach and on task-based techniques. These approaches will be presented in the light of the linguistic theories from which they derive. Emphasis will be placed on aspects relating to language learning and acquisition, including acquisitional sequences, teaching and learning strategies, the role of input and interlanguage. These issues will be discussed in the light of the teaching of Italian as a second language in Malta.
