UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Languages and Humanities Education

DESCRIPTION Students are to be exposed to the basic theoretical notions regarding teaching Italian as a second language (L2). Teaching strategies are to be discussed in the light of the importance of the media in the Italian L2 classroom. The first part of the course includes a critical examination of theoretical principles related to the media and to language learning via the radio and television. Aspects relating to the language of these means of communication will also be discussed with reference to the notions of non-interactive, non-simplified and authentic input. Issues related to printed material – newspapers and magazines – will also be presented. The second part of the course will be dedicated to the role of Internet in Italian L2 teaching and learning. Internet is seen both as a useful resource for teachers and also as a means of encouraging students to interact using the L2. Samples of schemes of works and lesson plans will be included in the course. Materials to teach Italian L2 will be presented, most of which will be based on the media including television and radio programmes, newspapers, magazines and the Internet.
