DESCRIPTION A very important aspect in foreign language teaching is evaluation. This study-unit is to focus on an in-depth analysis of evaluation techniques involved in the acquisition of Italian as a second language. During the study-unit students will discuss various aspects pertaining both to the evaluation of textbooks as well as to other teaching materials. The patterns of acquisition of Italian L2 will be discussed and learner varieties will be considered. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2002) will be used in order to set evaluative parameters. Each of the six levels of the CEFR will be analysed in detail. Various methods regarding correction and evaluation will be presented to students. These methods include aspects regarding formative evaluation to be implemented during the teaching course, as well as summative evaluation, which includes the setting of test and examination papers. The underlying characteristics and the criteria necessary for a valid test will also be discussed in detail. Samples of students work will be presented to the students as well as copies of school tests and SEC (Italian) exams. The final part of the course will be dedicated to an analysis of the certification system currently being used in Italy, namely the PLIDA and the CILS examinations.
