DESCRIPTION This study-unit prepares students with no previous knowledge of Arabic to interact in Arabic-speaking environments in basic informal and formal Arabic, and to distinguish between various conversational registers. Students will learn how to fill in basic forms, write short and simple letters or postcards, take notes on familiar and predictable matters.

This study-unit covers the following themes: familiar everyday expressions, introducing oneself and/or others, asking and answering questions about personal details, directions, etc. Students are expected to dedicate at least one hour weekly of private study during which they may be assigned language tasks aimed, in particular, at assimilating new vocabularies and consolidating the skills acquired in class.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at:
1. strengthing elements covered in Proficiency in Arabic 1 (breakthrough);
2. introducing students to the basic notions of informal and formal Arabic conversation in both the vernacular and the Standard registers; and
3. covering the topics outlined above.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to consolidate and apply the following new grammar and lexicon elements:

Vocabulary: Names, Locations, Adjectives, Activities;
Phonetics: Identify and pronounce the sounds of Arabic;
Grammar: Nouns, Pronouns, Prepositions and equational sentence;
Interrogative Elements: Who? Where? How?

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Greet and introduce oneself and/or others (including origin and nationality);
Ask how someone is doing;
Describe family and friends with limited vocabularies; and
Write short simple letters or postcards.
