DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to provide an overview of the main avant-gardes of the 20th century (Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, Bauhaus, Dadaism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Art Brut, Situationism). The unit will focus on literature and the visual arts but will also address the philosophical and political contexts in which those movements emerged.
Seminars and lectures will consist of a general presentation of a movement, a reading from the course reader and a commentary of an iconic avant-garde text. Presentation of pictures and documentaries of or on the avant-garde will follow.

Study-unit Aims

- The aims of this study-unit are:
- To give students an introduction to modern art theory in its most radical expression.
- To examine the aesthetics of the avant-garde.
- To draw a panorama of the art and literature of the avant-garde in the Western world.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Be able to associate a work of art or a work of literature with an avant-garde.
- To identify features of a given avant-garde.

Additionally the student will be able to explain the essential characteristics that define an avant-garde movement.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Improve his knowledge of literature and art in the perspective of academic research. Be able to draw links between the avant-garde, the literary canon and popular culture.
- These skills improve the intellectual ability to write a paper of a scholarly nature in the academic fields of the Humanities.
