DESCRIPTION Study-unit Aims

- To develop students ability to think critically and reflexively about how space is experienced
- To develop students ability to conceptualise, document, and articulate their thoughts and experiences of space through a range of digital media.
- To introduce students to the potentials of digital media to represent and articulate thoughts, feelings, and experiences of space.
- To develop students ability to theorise experiences of space.
- To develop in students a range of intellectual, theoretical, conceptual, and practical skills in thinking about and representing ideas about space.

Study-unit Rationale

To develop students awareness of the experience of space as relevant to students of the built environment, town planning, human geography, film and media production, journalistic, creative, fiction, and travel writing, and tourism.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this study-unit students will be able to;

i) Begin to theorise the experience of space.
ii) Generate original thoughts and ideas relating to space.
iii) Articulate ideas about the experience of space through class discussion, theoretical presentations and seminars, and through practice led documentary projects.
iv) Gain an introduction to some critical and scholarly literature concerning the human experience of space.
v) Transform thoughts, ideas, and experiences into digital documentary representations that can be used to communicate with others aspects of individuals’ experience of space.

Skills

By the end of this study-unit students will have;

i) Developed their ability to research, read, and document their experiences of space in professional and scholarly contexts.
ii) Developed skills in public speaking and digital media presentations.
iii) Producing creative projects using a range of media forms such as digital film and video, digital still photography, digital audio and other digital new media forms including web site design and construction, digital writing and performance.
iv) Integrated scholarly intellectual research into practice led projects.
v) Developed and demonstrated an ability to deploy coherent arguments and justifiable analyses of the experience of space.
vi) Developed skills in analytical thinking, criticism, and creative synthesis of ideas and the representation of experiences of space.
vii) Developed original and unique solutions to self identified problems.
viii) Worked successfully with other students.
