DESCRIPTION Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit exposes students to a range of 20th century artistic practice and cultural production issues through research seminars, class workshops and discussion, course work, and set projects. Students will gain a deeper understanding of;

- The nature of art and culture.
- Why art is important to culture, and why culture is important to people and society.
- What contemporary living culture is.
- How artistic production takes place in contemporary Maltese and international settings.
- The viability of artistic and cultural production.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this study-unit students will have;
- Critically looked at and discussed the work of a number of influential artists of the 20th Century.
- Learned about and begun to evaluate the role of artists and work of art in relation to the production of culture.
- Identified and articulated some of the values needed in evolving a critical creative or artistic or cultural practice.
- Generated original thoughts, ideas, and projects relating to the creation of artistic and other innovative cultural works.
- Generated original thoughts, ideas, and workshops relating to the notion of culture and its production, as well as its relationship to art.
- Articulated critical ideas about art and culture through class discussion, theoretical presentations and seminars, and through practice led creative and artistic projects.
- Gained an overview of some of the critical artistic movements of the 20th Century.
- Developed an ability to transform both self generated thoughts, ideas, and experiences as well as received ideas about artistic and creative production and its relationship to culture into representational forms such as class seminars, workshops and creative works that communicate such ideas and experiences with others.

Skills

By the end of this study-unit students will have;
i) Developed their ability to research and present findings concerning the work of artists in scholarly contexts.
ii) Deepened skills in public speaking and audio visual presentations.
iii) Developed skills in presenting educational and didactic workshops dealing with the production of creative, artistic, and cultural works.
iv) Produced creative projects, seminar presentations, and class workshops using a range of media such as still and moving image, painting, drawing, sound art, web sites, writing and performance.
v) Begun to develop appropriate scholarly, theoretical, and critical analytical skills and methods of research drawn from the areas of art, art history, cultural studies, and the humanities and social sciences more broadly.
vi) Begun to develop and demonstrate an ability to deploy coherent theoretical arguments and justifiable analyses of art and culture.
vii) Worked successfully in peer groups in the achievement of group devised and group directed goals.
viii) Deepened skills in identifying and formulating self defined problems as well as arriving at unique and appropriate solutions to those problems.

Assessment

Students will be assessed through a variety of means including self assessment, lecturer assessment, and peer group and collaborator assessment. Assessment will be drawn from a number of assessable tasks as well as on-going assessment based on participation and engagement in the course.

The assessable tasks for the study-unit are;
- Group devised and directed seminar presentations making reference to at least four of the texts drawn from the suggested topics identified in each seminar
- Group devised and presented in class workshop dealing with some aspect of Cultural Studies in relation to cultural production
- Self devised and directed creative or artistic project demonstrating an understanding of how the work performs in the production of culture
- On-going assessment based on participation and engagement in the course (includes peer group assessment
