DESCRIPTION This study-unit will familiarise students with the fundamental principles, theory and practice of manual and instrumental documentation used in a conservation context.

The lecture component will introduce the history, purpose, principles and theory of documentation in a conservation context.

This will be complemented with practical work where students will learn the basics of textual and graphic documentation in a conservation context, including different manual and instrumental techniques, including photography, drawing, and non-invasive imaging techniques. These will be integrated, as far as possible, within other Study Units, including BLH4009 and BLH4012.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the Study-Unit is to introduce students to the history, principles, theory and practice of the different forms of documentation that are typically encountered in a conservation context.

This will include familiarisation with the more commonly used procedures, conventions and notations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the role and importance of documentation in a conservation intervention;
- given a set of documentation of an existing conservation intervention, the student will be expected to correctly interpret the standard conventions and notations used in the documentation;
- identify the more suitable documentation techniques for a specific situation, including non-invasive imaging techniques.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- produce a suitable photographic record of simple conservation interventions, making correct use of the more common procedures and conventions;
- given digital (e.g. ACAD) base-drawings of a building or artefact which is undergoing a state-of-conservation survey, students will be able to produce simple two-dimensional overlays to map different surface phenomena, using appropriate conventions (In cases where students have previous proficiency in ACAD, the use of other tools for conservation documentation will be encouraged).
