DESCRIPTION This set of lectures on documentation and research will deal with the importance, purposes and objectives of documentation in relation to the study, deterioration and conservation of historic buildings. An important part of this unit will be on the location of archival information and other sources of information. It will discuss approaches and techniques, including also carrying out the initial survey of a building, preserving the record and analytical recording, as well as recording during works.

Other aspects to be dealt with include process and tools for the compilation of a document, including specialised instruments for documentation, the methodology of archiving documents, and documentation of landscape archaeology.

This study-unit will also cover topics such as reading in different ways, taking notes (and avoiding plagiarism), a structured approach to writing, citations and references (including electronic sources) and technical aspects of writing.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of this study-unit are:
- to familiarise that student with the tools available to carry out research both in general terms and also specifically in relation to the documentation of historic buildings and their deterioration and conservation
- to introduce the student to the proper ways of carrying out archival research and to present written documents in a technically correct manner.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to carry out archival research, also in relation to the documentation of historic buildings
- Explain the steps involved in the documentation of a historic building
- Choose the correct tools for the documentation of a specific problem in a historic building

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Produce documents showing the accurate documentation of a given historic building using appropriate tools
- Compile a technically accurate report with proper referencing
- Give a presentation within a given time limit, in a clear manner and with appropriate visual aids.
