TITLE Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture

DESCRIPTION This unit is suitable for students who have started the unit of Chinese Language 1, or who have the equivalent knowledge of this latter study-unit. It is designed to reinforce and develop language skills in listening, reading and writing as well as introduce elements of Chinese civilisation and culture.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To introduce some basic elements of Chinese phonetics (initials, finals and tones);
2. To provide students with the basic knowledge of Chinese characters, their history and function in China and Asia (China, Korea and Japan);
3. To enable students to understand basic elements of Chinese civilisation and culture (mythology, festivals, religions and philosophies, food).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) introduce himself/herself in front of the class and ask simple questions in Chinese related to everyday life;
2) read short passages and write simple sentences in very simple Chinese about oneself and everyday life;
3) understand and discern the major characteristics of the Chinese language and basic elements of Chinese culture, especially those related to mythology, festivals, religions and philosophies, food, modern economy and political culture.  

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) make a close reading of texts in basic simplified Chinese;
2) develop a greater attention to detail especially when considering far-away cultures and languages;
3) learn to dialogue better and express himself/herself in a foreign language.
