DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is suitable for students who have completed the course of Communicating in Chinese 1 and 2, or who have the equivalent knowledge of these study-units. It is meant to be complementary to Chinese Language 4. It will focus on training the students' oral skills through selected real-life situations and topics. Students are expected to develop the ability to make practical use of the language in increasingly complex real-life situations and to participate spontaneously in conversations. Study-unit Aims The study-unit aims to assist students in: 1. being able to grasp the vocabulary learnt in CHN2004 through listening and by being able to use effectively the various tones of the Chinese language. 2. reading the sentences and texts learnt in CHN2004 using the correct pronunciation and tones. 3. holding extended conversations using the vocabulary learnt. 4. expressing oneself in more detail and to have more complex conversations with native speakers. 5. giving longer presentations using correct Chinese grammar and sentence structures. 6. understanding further Chinese customs and to communicate with native Chinese speakers in a culturally appropriate manner. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1) master the vocabulary and the texts learnt in CHN2004. 2) infer the correct information from extended conversations and topic-oriented discussions. 3) master and use correctly the Chinese grammar and sentence structures learnt in CHN2004. 4) acquaint themselves with Chinese culture and society through a correct understanding of texts and conversations. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1) understand better people from different cultural backgrounds. 2) appreciate the skill and art of conversation. 3) contribute to a more harmonious world by seriously taking into consideration the viewpoint of others. 4) be better prepared to undertake the study of other languages.
