DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to provide the student with a thorough grounding of the topics and problems concerning the philosophical and literary tradition of pre-modern and modern times in China. Taught in English, and based mainly on translated texts, this study-unit covers different cultural and literary movements and genres of literature, such es pre-modern poetry and the first modern Chinese short stories.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To present to the students select literary works major influential Chinese writers in pre-modern and modern China.
- To help students gain a thorough foundation in the various literary movements and genres used in pre-modern and modern Chinese literature. The social, political and intellectual context of the writers will be taken into consideration.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:

- Have a fair understanding of the problems and characteristics of the pre-modern and modern Chinese literary genres.
- Be able to discern the various phenomena pertaining to the different literary genres, and define the historical-cultural contexts that are useful for the analysis of the texts of authors examined in class.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Read, comprehend and analyse texts, mainly in English translation, of pre-modern and modern Chinese literary texts.
- Understand and critically comment on East Asian phenomena related to culture and literature.
