| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will offer students the opportunity to practice reading Chinese texts at an advanced level. Since this study-unit is a synoptic one, they will be expected to show that they can read and understand well various types of Chinese texts such as newspapers, short stories, novels, as well as select texts from the web. They must also demonstrate they the possess the necessary skills to read and understand the aforementioned texts in a relatively short time. Students will also be asked to show that they understand the texts they read by comprehension exercises and by writing summaries of what they read. Study-unit Aims 1. to teach students how to read advanced Chinese texts of various types, such as newspapers, short stories, novels, as well as select texts from the web. 2. to ensure that students understand the texts they read by providing comprehension exercises and by asking them to write summaries of the texts they read. 3. to train students how to read and understand the select texts in a relatively short time. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. read advanced Chinese texts of various types, such as newspapers, short stories, novels, as well as select texts from the web. 2. demonstrate an understanding of the texts s/he reads by taking comprehension exercises and by writing summaries of the texts s/he reads 3. read and comprehend the select texts in a relatively short time via training in various types of reading skills. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. make a close reading of texts. 2. understand more easily and quickly, even texts which are rather difficult. 3. gain a better cultural awareness of other nations. SHI, JI, GRADED CHINESE READER I, BEIJING, SINOLINGUA, 2007. These books can be found either at the University library or at the Confucius Institute library. More bibliography will be given in class as necessary. |
