DESCRIPTION The aim of this study-unit, primarily taught in English, is to give an overview of Chinese literary works through a cross-cultural and transnational approach. The comparative content of this study-unit includes theoretical and critical exploitation of Chinese and Western literary and philosophical works across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to help students:
- Study Chinese literature through comparison with Western writings.
- Appreciate the various elements that characterise China's and Western literary movements through comparative approach.
- Comprehend a cross-cultural and transtextual analysis of different literary and philosophical traditions in China and the West.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Have a comprehensive and deeper understanding of Chinese literature when compared to other examples of Western literary works.
- Be able to discern the traits and characteristics of classical and modern Chinese works referring to relevant texts of other literature.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Read, comprehend and analyse texts, mainly in English translation, from Chinese and other literatures (Western and non-Western).
- Critically comment on transcultural and transtextual questions pertaining to Chinese and different literatures and understand the various literary movements, forms, genres and authors in a comparative context.
