DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to enhance and deepen students’ knowledge about China’s material culture as it relates to the study of art as a discipline. In essence, this unit questions how to define art in the Chinese context. This unit also presents the major scholarly and ideological discourses of art history, especially in terms of distinguishing between Western and Asian artistic practices. The primary subject matter for this unit shall include painting, sculpture, calligraphy, ceramics and other pottery, and various folk arts. Additionally, many thematic currents will run through the course, such as the spread of Buddhism, the intersection between the Chinese script and art, and historical events as represented in art, to name a few.

Study-unit Aims:

- Acquaint students with art from China and its surrounding regions in different forms and contexts;
- Develop students’ ability to read and analyze different forms of art especially where it pertains to material culture and local context;
- Build upon students’ knowledge of the historical distinctions between Western and Asian conceptualisations of art and art history as a discipline.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and discuss important periods in the art history of China, common aesthetic principles, and influential artists and their works;
- Describe art’s relationship to society, culture, and politics in Asia throughout history.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically examine the nature of art in China and Asia from an historical perspective;
- Read and draw on theoretical and empirical scholarship pertaining to the issues of material culture, art aesthetics and interpretation, and art history;
- Appreciate the artistic heritages of a variety of Chinese and other Asian cultures.
