DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is meant to expose the student to as wide perspective as possible of Roman genres and chronology of literary production. The following authors will therefore be discussed according to their genres: epic ( Andronicus, Naevius, Ennius, Vergil, Lucan, Statius, Valerius Flaccus and Silius Italicus), didactic (Lucretius and Vergil), elegy and lyric (Catullus, Horace and Statius), satire (Lucilius, Horace, Juvenal and Persius), tragedy (Seneca), Comedy (Plautus and Terence), history (Sallust, Caesar, Livy and Tacitus), oratory (Cicero), rhetoric (Cicero, Seneca, Tacitus and Quintilian), philosophy (Cicero and Seneca), pastoral (Vergil), novel (Petronius, Seneca and Apuleius), biography (Suetonius), correspondence (Cicero and Pliny) and scientific writing (Cato, Varro, Columella, Vitruvius and Vegetius). Study-unit Aims: This study-unit is intended to give to students a survey of Roman authors. Learning Outcomes: Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify different subject matters within Latin literature. - Relate on Roman authors.
