DESCRIPTION The study-unit will help students to become aware of the fundamental cooperative principles, their practical implementation, their constraints and limitations as well as the opportunities that can be harnessed to create successful cooperatives. Drawing on real case-studies, this study unit will discuss the challenges, rights and obligations of cooperative members in turning cooperatives into a successful business model that is beneficial to them and to society in general.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to help students become aware of the all-important principles that define a cooperative enterprise.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the fundamental cooperative principles;
- Recognise the importance of these principles as a basis for cooperative success;
- Become aware of the practical implications of the cooperative principles on the organsation and well as on its members.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the practical implications of the cooperative principles;
- Make a causal link between these principles;
- Make a case for good practice as a basis of successful cooperation.
